gear shifter shaking

alright i posted a thread not too long ago about my shifter shaking around pretty violently, i thought it might have been the transmission mount which it wasnt. (it needed to replaced anyhow) but now im stuck the next thing i would think it could be is the CV u joint on the front driveshaft cause i noticed metal shavings on my skid plate when i took it down. any comments on what else it could be?

A side-to-side gear shifter movement when accelerating/deaccelerating makes me think broken engine mount. The engine lifts up on the side of the broken mount during acceleration which twists the engine/transmission/transfer case which tilts the shifter too. Letting off the gas lets the engine back down onto the broken engine mount which lets the shifter move back to the side to where it should be.

When you have a choice, buy American made.

what if the engine isnt moving? this si probably a stupid question but is the motor lifting off of the broken mount something i cant see? cause i took it out and all the guys with me said they couldnt see the engine moving up at all or even side to side. i know the front shaft cv u joint needs replacing, would that cause this to happen also?

when in doubt, press the skinny pedal!

Mine does it a bit, and I'm pretty sure my mounts are fine. Isn't a little bit of movement normal?

Try punching the throttle a bit at a lower speed in 1st gear. A giant resounding 'CLUNK' will be heard if your mounts are pooched.

The engine/transmission/transfer case is one long rigid assembly mounted to the Jeep at just three points.... two engine mounts at the front and one transmission mount at the rear. If the shifter is moving side-to-side much as the engine is revved, especially during acceleration/deacceleration, the only thing that could be causing it is a broken engine mount... especially since you already replaced the transmission mount which doesn't normally cause this problem even when it is broken.

Note that the gear shifter merely shaking/vibrating is much different from it swinging side-to-side as you accelerate/deaccelerate. The former can simply be from drivetrain vibrations, but the latter is just about always going to be from a broken engine mount.

When you have a choice, buy American made.

Mine uesd to do that driving down the road. I attributed it to drive line vibe and angles. I just had a SYE and CV shaft installed and havent seen or felt it since.

'02 Sport..... Stock no more.... RE 3.5 SF, RE adjustable trackbar(F/R) and 33x12.50x15 BFG MT's installed

I just discovered this problem today too. Was doing alot of stop and go in a crowded parking lot between 1st and 2nd gear and the stick shift was shaking alot, even when I would take my foot of the gas while in gear. It also does it while coasting to a stop. I'm going to check the mounts as soon as I can. I've had a t-case drop since June '10 but I've never really had problems.

Quick question tho, how do you check/tell if a motor mount is bad?
