Front Axle Hub Bearing Flange Question - JeepForum.com

Front Axle Hub Bearing Flange Question

I pulled my front axle shafts to change the inner seals. I noticed that on the 2 axles, the flange behind the hub unit bearing was facing differently, as shown in the picture below.

Unless this was done, one side reversed, during the first 5 years of its life, I assume it came from the factory this way.

Not that I going to change it, but which way is correct? The shaft on the left with the red showing is the driver's side.

Just checked both Jeeps: on the '00 that I've owned since it had two miles on the clock and know both axle shafts are original, both flanges face the axle u-joint; on the '05 that I've owned since 34k miles on the clock and believe both axle shafts are original, both flanges face the hub. I guess you can take your pick which direction the flange faces.

thanks. this explains everything and it makes total sense now. since you have a 00 and a 05, it makes perfect sense that my 02 was the "transition year". that's why one side is one way, and the other side the other way.

the passenger side axle shaft assembly line got the memo before the drivers side axle shaft assembly line.

I always thought my TJ was special.

Neither is actually correct for a sealed unit bearing. One can make a case that the flange on the slinger is doing some good acting as a debris guard when it is close to the back of the UB but that's it. The other one is wholly wrong since it is a carryover from an actual spindle and locking hub design and it carried a V seal that butted up to the back of the spindle to keep water/dirt out of the bearings. Without the V seal and the big gap between the flange and the back face of the UB, it is useless.

I just find it really odd how inconsistent the orientation is. Not only from year to year, but even within a year like my 02. I have every reason to believe that my axles are not only original but have never even been removed before this past week.

I am multi-talented, I can talk and piss you off at the same time.

I guess that's why my Jeep built in June of 02' has one square mirror and one rounded style one. Thanks for clearing that one up for me. A transition year special Jeep. I thought the PO was just too cheap to buy two.

They are essentially a useless artifact from the older spindle and wheel bearing design so it makes little difference how they are mounted.

Thanks Blaine and others for the input. When I first saw the different flange mountings, my first thought was, "that's not right, I need to fix it". Then my second thought was, "it's been that way for 17 years, and if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

I do see where the flange toward the hub bearing would offer more protection, and if I ever have that side apart, I can "fix it" at that time.
