Drill into hard top for roof rack?

So i want to get a roof rack like the Thule cargo rack but i dont know about drilling into the hard top for the rails.
Has anyone done this here and do you have any problems.
Im also looking for any other opinions on racks.

There are racks out there that attach at the base of the windshield and rear bumper.

Junkyard Roof Rack. Cost me $50 for the rack and about 5 for the hardware.

i love my roof rack. The one from the Exporers can be broken down so I only have the rails during the summer. 10 minutes to add the crossbars to go snowboarding. I haven't put anything else on there because it's too tall to reach easily. I also don't know how much weight to put on it. I've had 3 snowboards and 1 pair of skis up there and it was fine.

Here's another from a JY. Unlike Unlimited04's which is from an Explorer I believe, mine is from an older XJ. $25 for the rails and crossbars from the JY, and just a few bucks for the hardware. It took all of half an hour to install.

By the way, I had to trim mine down a few inches length and width wise to get it to fit better on my LJ. With my Yakima rack on there I have no issues carrying 1-4 snowboards to the mountains, 2+ hours away.

Mine had to be cut down lengthwise also, but the width was fine for me.

@04GC: Hi, I'm still a little new to jeeps. I have a 99 tj now. Is that flat rear door available on TJ?? That is awesome! Also, what rack system are you using? I was going to build pretty much exactly what you have there. Love the awning too. What is it? I think I see ARB?

when you mount your roof rake from the pick & pull for $20. use fender washers on the inside for more strength. and put a little bit of gasket sealer/rtv silicone to keep the moisture out. No problems.

I got my roof rack off a ford explorursure. or one of the small fords, $20 is the going price. and I used two ATV racks from harbor freight to make the rack for the top.

So $120 or so I was in business with a rack on top my hard top strong enough for me to stand on at 200 lbs.
