Clarification on wheel backspacing

So i have searched the forum and at this point i have just confused myself more i think. There are quite a few posts on backspacing, how to measure, what the backspacing is on factor wheels......tons of info. Yet somehow i aint getting it. So some clarification please.
i bought some wheels (15x8) and they stick out way too far. They throw crap all over the sides now because they stick out beyond the fenders. I thought i was getting close to the stock backspacing ....but apparently not.
So the question. According to the very helpful sticky on here about stock specs, my original steel wheels (15x7) had a backspacing of 5.5. So the more positive the number the closer the wheel is to the axle? or the more positive the number the more it sticks out?
At this point i am completely unhappy with these wheels and too worried about wasting more money on wheels i dont understand how to pick out.
Any help or suggestions?

The smaller the number, the more the wheel moves out of the body line, sticks out.

it is the measurement of the spacing of the back of the wheel

This assuming the same width wheel is used when comparing the backspacing between wheels.
