Chsnge head gasket before it starts leaking/blows?

Just thinking proactively...i have 117,000+ on the motor and was thinking of changing it before i need to. Question is, should i still get the head resurfaced if im not experiencing any problems?

EDIT: the motor runs fine, does not overheat nor do i have oil/coolant mixing together.

Not sure if I would change the head gasket (especially on a 4.0) as just maintenance. If you have some upgrades planned (port/polish, etc then maybe) otherwise the head gasket is not a typical problem on 4.0s unless you have been running it hot or have a million miles. There is a lot of other regular maintenance items and/or mods you could make with your money instead of replacing a head gasket that doesn't have a problem.

Yeah y'all are right I just get paranoid about maintenance sometimes with it being a DD.

I've driven a couple of vehicles close to, or over 200,000 miles and never had issues with head gaskets on either. My TJ currently has 130,000 miles on it with no engine issues. It is one of those things that often outlasts everything else on a vehicle.

My old Jeep has over 230,000 miles on it now and never had the head gasket replaced.

Why mess with something that is not broke? Seems like you could cause yourself more headaches doing this.

I wouldn't even consider it. Especially with my luck, it'd leak if I replaced it for no reason, then I'd be sitting there wishing I never touched it.

I know because that is exactly what happened to my rear main seal. I had to take the oil pan off for another reason and decided to change out the RMS while I was in there. It didn't leak before, now it does just slightly. Not enough to worry about, just an occasional tiny drop, but it didn't leak at all before.

I've learned my lesson.

Well I did replaced the whole cooling system even though just the radiator was leaking, and everything went fine, but...
