Blower motor runs only in defrost position

Well, my blower motor stopped working in my 97 TJ. I did a search and found a lot of info, but none to address my symptoms. The blower will not work in any of the four speeds no matter what selection I make. ( A/C, upper vent, foot vent, defrost, etc.) Now if I hold the selection slide all the way to the right, in the defrost position, all four blower speeds work. Anyone with any ideas?

I would say you have a bad A/C, Heater control head.

This seems to be a common problem in TJs. Me and my two friends both have the same problem. With mine, i can let off the gas, and it will start working, then when i start going again it will quit, its annoying on a cold morning with the top off, i tell ya. That little flap in the vent hose likes to flap around when its not supposed to. I cant tell you the cure though. IF you figure it out, let me know.

There is a place that the vac. hose goes under the passenger side. behind the bat. is the plastic vac line and hose. it runs down the firewall and into a canister (I think). Check that. Follow the hose. If it's disconnected the control acts erratically. That was the problem with mine. Theres about a 1 1/4 inch rubber hose connection that became brittle and cracked. I just cut the rubber after the crack and pushed it back on.

*** I couldn't SEE where the hose went - I had to feel for where it connected. I can try to take pics if you need. Let me know!

Otherwise on the drivers side of the engine bay near the master brake, theres a T joint for the vac. lines. That may be the problem - either way it is the beginning of the hose segment I described above - you could follow it from there.

Whoops! It looks like you may have 2 problems... I had the same problems... the fan module is located under the dash near the passenger feet. It's a bear to get out. It's actually a sensor like thing that goes in the blower. I can snap a pic if you need. hard to describe.

I found the problem! On the back of the Climate Control Slide Selector Switch, on the right hand side, there is a flat, 4 blade connector. The locking clip was broken and allowed the connector to back out. Apparently, when I was pushing on the right side of the panel, in the defrost position, the connector made enough contact to allow the bower motor to function. I repluged the connector, secured it with tape, and everything works as new.
