Axle Dilema?

I have a D35 w/ bad bearings. The rebuild kit is roughly $100. I can go get a Super 35 w/ Detroit locker and 4.56 gears for $400. I think the axle swap would be much easier than tearing apart my current diff. What do you think? I know that most will say get a 8.8 or D44, but my budget is very limited at this point and the price is good on the S35.

Yeah...it is complete. He said it has 8-10k miles on it. Said it was only wheeled mild, but he is putting in a Prorock 60...so doubt he is a moderate wheeler. I think this is a good deal. I have to drive a 4 hours to get it though.

I think those usually run about $1000. That is a steal, get off line and go pick it up!

i would buy the Super 35 in a heartbeat. $400 plus 4 hours
of driving seems like a small price to pay IMO, especially since
your running 35's on that D35.... its probably bound to grenade
itself sooner rather then later. the upgraded shafts of the S35 kit
will hold up much better

I think he has a super 30 for sale also. I may see how much he wants. Said it has been sitting on his garage floor for 2 years. Is there anything I should look for? I will pull the plug and drain the diff fluid and check for sludge and metal. Anything else?

congrats on the good deal - get em both if you can afford it (but if not get the super 35) you can get by just fine on the stock dana 30 but why pass up a smoking deal if you can spare the clams

Congrats on a good deal. They are few and far between but it's nice when you land one.

Congrats that is a pretty good deal. If you havn't already considered doing the swap yourself you might want to. Its actually pretty easy and can be done with basic hand tools. You can even reuse the brakes from your old axle if you want. I just did an axle swap myself so if you have any questions feel free to pm me.

Just got home. The guy selling these was a real cool guy and promised to refund my money if there are any problems. They were really good people. He offered me the other axle for $200, but I had no room. I may drive back up there. He thought it had a S30 in it but was not sure. It does have 4.56 gears. They both had leaky pinion seals. Thanks everyone for your input, I guess I was lucky today. I think I am going to try to use my old brakes (drum brakes). Is this easy to do? Any write up?
