Automatic Shift Selector went "Loose"...

FYI for my fellow TJ owners.

Sitting at the Pick-up window at McDonald's, Selector in neutral, waiting for my order, get order and pull the selector backward to "D"......and NOTHING happens.
Selector engages nothing and is free to move from Park to 1......

OH, Oh....
So, get out of Jeep, wife gets in the drivers seat and I proceed to push the Jeep to the right into the parking area. (Still in Neutral from waiting for order.....)
Fortunately, no one is parked there because only Drive Through is open.

Get under the Jeep and see that the shift cable has 'popped off' the neoprene fitting which regulates the transmission.

So, best as I can, reattach the shift cable to the trans fitting, gear selector now works and I'm on my way home.

In my shop, I attach the cable to the trans with a couple of cable ties until I can get the repair parts.

A little scary but an easy 'on the road' fix.

See photos attached.

Haha! One time I read here on JF with a link to buy that stupid little plastic connector on eBay. Fortunately I had a new one in my Jeep's tool bag when about a month later the same thing happened to me as the original one literally disintegrated after 10 years.

I was most surprised that it wasn't metal?! I went ahead and also put a zip tie around it.

When you have a choice, buy American made.
