Adding Power Steering to a TJ

Well, somehow I managed to pick up what seems like the only manual steering TJ. I also have about 25-35 degrees of play in the steering box and will have to replace it ASAP; I called a Jeep junkyard today and they had a few power steering boxes for TJs, but no manual steering boxes.

My question is how hard would it be to add power steering to my rig? I can get a PS box for $100 and I figure I can get the pump, pulley and lines for another $50-$100 and a manual box from NAPA is $239 w/$166 core.

Figure I can fix the loose steering and add PS and knock two birds out at once.

How easy is this to do?

some tj's didnt come with power steering and some didnt come with a/c. go figure. i think if you would take all the p/s stuff off a donor vehicle it would go on your jeep. just make sure you get everything from the shaft to the pitman arm the pump the pulleys and a belt and the bracket that the pump boilts too. the pumps changed sometime cause they have some with the resivior built in and some without. i know my 98's is with so your 97 might be the same. just make sure you get it off the same engine size the bracket might be differnt from 4's to 6's.

At a glance (and this is using the ol' eyeball ruler) the bolt pattern for that manual box appears to be the same as for the PS box (no real reason why Jeep would make it different anyway I suppose). If you pull the box, lines, pump, and bracket from the donor vehicle you should be good to go. Then hit up Napa for a new serp. belt.

Yes, a LOT of base model TJs (SE) came with no power steering. Only in 97 I believe. Before they started 'value added' stuff, the base model was very base indeed. Even a rear seat was an option.
The quick order package that included power steering also included an am/fm radio!...
Made a CJ look fancy...

BillyV - get everything. Box, lines, pump, brackets, etc . ALSO take a Good look (take a pic and bring it with you) of your belt and pulleys setup. Get the belt and the tensioner etc - anything that's different than yours.

Then just bolt it all on. It's a no brainer.

Thanks alot for all of the info, guys! I would have just figured that P/S would have been standard equipment in '97, but seems it's not.

I figured I could pick up all the equipment from a donor vehicle, which is what I'm gonna do.

Thanks again!!

That's crazy. My dad's 97 was as base as he could get, (no radio even) only option he got was the bigger gas tank, and back seat.
And it didn't have the back seat, they actually ordered one for him.

But he has power steering.
(I know, cause it's leaking. and I need to get up there to give him a hand replacing it)
