Acquiring a new to me 2006 TJ

I am going to be getting a well loved 2006 model that has a blown engine (218K approx) from the original owner. I'm being told it is blown, haven't looked at it myself, but the price is right for me to go across the state to pick it up. Bone stock, 4.0L with the 6 speed manual gearbox. Hard and soft tops, two sets of wheels and tires are coming with it.

My plan for it is to fix the engine, or replace it, and then find any other issues it may have. My 14 year old will be helping me do the work, so that they get to learn how to fix things, then learn to drive in it. In time it may get a small lift and other mods. It will be intended as a family use pleasure vehicle, not a daily driver.

What gear ratio should this have in the axles? My previous TJ was a 97 with the 32RH auto in it. The 3.07 gears were lousy with the 32" tires on that. Just wondering if I will be looking at the same issue with this one when I put larger tires on it. No idea yet what rear axle it has, assuming the D35 though. He bought it new off the lot, so it wasn't a special order by him.

its possible to have 3.07 or 3.73.

the bigger question is how is the frame with 218k michigan miles. many are not salvageable at that point

I don't know yet, I haven't ever laid eyes on it. It is about two hours away. I believe it has been garage kept most of its life, but I don't know if that included regular under carriage wash downs. I'll be picking it up in a little over a week.

I'd ask for some good frame pictures before driving that far.

I could replace the frame if I need to, considering the price I am getting it for (price is "come get it!").

Sounds like you are signing up for a giant time and money sink. If I were looking for a cheap project jeep to ultimately be vehicle for a teen driver I'd look at XJs. Can be found in good condition much cheaper than TJs. Much better vehicle for first time drivers. Still easy to work on and lots of modification possibilities.

I was just responding to the suggestion that the frame "may" have issues, but is unknown currently. The worst thing that could happen is that I find it has frame problems, and I decide to part it out. I still win monetarily on it. The kid will learn to drive a manual trans in it, but it will not be their daily driver.

Can't argue with that
I'd pick it up in that situation too.

Yes, that's a good price. I'd pick it up too.

Went and picked it up last night. Turned out to be a 2004 X model, not 2006 as I was told. Frame is in fantastic shape! Has a little rust on lower edge of windshield frame. Axles are D35 and D30 as expected, but with 3.73 gears which is better than the 3.07's I had in my 97.

Nice, give us an update on the engine when you start working on it.

looks nice.

may want to lower the skid and check how it is between the skid and frame rails. hard to tell from the pics but it looks like it may be starting in there and it usually goes from the inside out. you can loosen the three bolts, on one side at a time, by ~.25" to inspect without removing anything else.

other than that it looks really nice.

Thanks, it will be a little while before it gets going. No garage, have to work outside.
