97 Tj interior options?

Hey guys I'm being really picky (like usual) my dash and interior is a light grey and ugly. I'm wondering how easy it would be to swap with an 03-06 black interior? Seats and everything. Do I need to swap wiring? Or what can I do to change my interior color to black/dark grey?

The first thing I thought about what the vht dye, it basically dyes any color vinyl or carpet but I don't know the durability or how long it will last.

Or I can swap with a 06 I found but isn't going to be cheap or easy to swap I don't think..

Anyone have experience changing their dashes?

What I mean is swapping to the other newer dashes (03-06). I know taking the dash apart is easy but is it easy to swap to a newer cluster and dash entirely? Is it even necessary to change the cluster?

Basically I need to talk to someone who has done it or attempted it

Well I know they will bolt up all the same, well mostly. But if I have to change the ecu and wiring harness for the new controls I don't even want to bother I don't think. The headlight controls are different so that might be the issue I run into (wiring).

Why not get some SEMM or kyrlon fusion paint and change the color of what you have. Would cost less than fifty bucks and you would not have to deal with fitting new parts. Then throw on some iggee seat covers and be drug carpet and your done. New interior at a fraction of the cost of replacing everything.

Wiring is different, ecus are different. If you want to do it you will probably have to change a lot or be really good at rewiring. Personally I'd just paint it or live with it.

I have a dash from a 05 in my 99. Its easy if you keep your cluster, harness and metal frame. You just change the main plastic piece and reuse all your older parts. The piece under the column with the headlight switch you will haft to drill a hole as the newer dash did not have a switch there.

Ahhhh never thought about that! Just take the plastic off the metal frame and voila! Have any pictures I'd love to see it!

just do what I did. My 97 was getting tired too. mist gray... It took me about a full week as I'm pretty picky about my ride as well. I pulled everything off and painted it flat black with Duplicolor plastic/interior paint and even added a 2 din touch screen stereo when I was done. The paint holds up pretty well, Havent really tested it yet but it's holding up. The airbag cover is the PITA. Was easy to remove but prep was hard as its such a soft rubber compound. Anyways it's about 90% prep and 10 % otherwise. You can't really sand anything as it's all plastic. Just use Dawn dishsoap and a scrub brush and clean clean clean clean clean. Then let it dry. Then use some mineral spirits. Let that dry. Then use several small coats and certainly don't be in a hurry. The paint goes on rather nice and touch ups are simple. Takes a good week in the sun w/your top off to fully bond but only a few hrs to handle. Here's a few pics.
