Is 97 TJ black the same as 2004 TJ black?

I'm looking at replacing a body part and found what I need from a 1997 and was hoping to avoid repainting.

I have a 2004 TJ. Does anyone know if its the same color black?

THANKS!!

Are you serious? Really, is this a real question?

Other then the older of the two jeeps may have faded paint and chalky clear coat, black is black.

I think its a good question, there are several shades of black.

Do you have something that confirms the same black was used on those model years?

I think it is safe to say that the 2 blacks will NOT match, even if they were the same to start with. Just the fact of age, fading, different paint techniques, care, etc.

Now, with that said, I also understand the above post about, black being black. Meaning, it is a Jeep, not a Lexus, kind of thinking.

Only you can make this decision.

My guess is that, yes, black is black, but a different type of clear coat may result in a shinier/deeper looking black vs a duller finish or an oxidized finish.
The "touch up" job on my '97 black hood was a different black than original and very noticeable, , , my 2 cents.

IMO, even a two tone black is better than rust & black.

7 years of exposure... think about it!!

Rokmen TT, Rokmen control arms, Novak NV241 cable shifter, JKS 1.25" BL + 1" MML.

Anybody can take advice if it doesn't interfere with their plan.

No need to be a jerk. Would I have asked it if it wasnt a real question? There is a 7 year difference in the two jeeps. How am I supposed to know if they didnt change shades of black during that time?

Black isnt always the same black from year to year and being as I am new to Jeeps I dont know how the vehicle colors are produced. I own a couple white cars and they are different shades of white. White isnt always white either and that goes for pretty much any color. Go into a paint shop and tell them you want your car painted red and they'll likely laugh before asking you what red you want.

FYI...in 1992 there are THREE different blacks used, 3 different whites, 3 different reds, 2 different blues....and I can keep going.
In 2004 there are FIVE different greens used.....lol.

Anyways....I managed to look up the two color codes and the same color black was used in 2004 as 1997.

The body part is in nice shape and I'd rather take my chance on the clear coat being off a little as I can always repaint it....rather than buy a red one or whatever other color and obviously having no option to repaint of have a different color grill. I'd rather chance it on the black one.

The same color black will fade to grey eventually... and black is one of the hardest colors to make look correct, just ask any bodyshop person... but for the most part, black on black will look better than blue on black, or any other color for that matter... if the price is right jump on it.

Thanks for your help! The way I look at it is that even if I have to have any grill...new or used....repainted to the black for my year its not going to match as the rest of the vehicle is aged. Its sort of a damned if you do damned if you dont thing.

The price is right so I've gotta go with it based on the information I've obtained.

Thanks again!!

I put 02 black half doors on my 97 black TJ. They are off just a bit. But you would not know until I told you. The 02 doors just look a bit cleaner and newer. Of course they would, 5 years newer.

Yeah I do. Its called a paint code, and the same black is used on both years. I don't care what you think, this is a stupid question.

black is black, same shape/color probably not, but as stated before we drive jeeps, if she needs a part get it on her and worry about making it look pretty later. it'll probably have a few trail beauty marks by then anyway

What is the paint code?

What is your source for TJ paint codes?

If you have some good info on this, I can add it to the FAQ.

The paint code is PX8. I found it at this website which shows all other vehicles, makes and years.

http://www.automotivetouchup.com/paint-code.htm

I still disagree about black being black. If that was the case we wouldnt need paint codes. There are different paint codes of black depending on the year. My error was the way I phrased my question. I should've said "Does a 1997 TJ have the same black paint code as a 2004 TJ?"

As you can see in my particular year there are two different reds....Flame and Poppy. It wouldn't have been safe to assume that red is red either. Would anyone know the difference between Shale Green & Moss Green? I wouldn't. How could I assume in 2004 my black isnt called Onyx Black and in 1997 it was called Jet Black?
