Wiring help needed - 1980 CJ7...or is it?

I have a 1980 CJ7 i bought the beginning of May. The wiring was a mess underhood and most of the connectors behind the dash were disconnected. I went with an MSD ignition and am prepping for a Howell injection conversion so most of the missing underhood wires weren't going to be used. The rest of the dead ends and cut wires can be repaired.

I have a 1979 FSM and bought a 1980 FSM because the wiring didn't match up. The bulkhead connector on my Jeep is larger with more terminals. I found a 1981 DSM on oljeep.com that has bullhead connectors that are the same shape. I started using it and things made sense.

Things made sense until I got behind the dashboard. The first issue is the flasher is square and not on the fuse box. The bigger issue was with the wiper switch.

The wiper motor has a three wire connector that goes to the switch. The wiring diagram shows a yellow wire (washer pump) and red wire (power) that are both separate. I searched for them unsuccessfully. I was about to unwrap the harness when i realized the only yellow wire went to a half-round connector along with a red wire. My multimeter showed the yellow wire was continuous from the bulkhead connector to the half-round connector. I checked RockAuto and see the wiper switch that uses the half-rpound connector was used from 1983 to 1986. Someone put a later wire harness on this Jeep.

Oljeep.com doesn't have a FSM after 1981. Does anyone have a 1983 - 1986 FSM or wire diagram they can share?

I took some pictures of the connectors I am talking about. Also there was a 3 wire connector in the harness that I don't know what it is for. It is the last picture. If anyone can ID it I would appreciate it. Bob

The 3-wire connector in your last pic is for a 4-cylinder tach.

I'm pretty sure that connector is present in all '80s CJs, regardless of what engine was used. Someone correct me, If I'm wrong.

I'll let more electrical savvy guys answer your other questions.

Matt

Thank you, this was helpful.

It feels good to finally understand what is happening to the wiring on this Jeep and to know I'm not crazy. I beat my head against the wall with this for a while.

Probably a 1980-1986 Fuse box

Unknown? Trailer flasher??

Turn signal flasher on the left (black) Horn relay on the right (white)

Wiper motor connector. Can be used for either normal or delay wiper setup 1984-86

I wanna say fog light but i'm not sure

The wiper switch connector is, I am sure, the exact same connector as on my 1981 FSJ J20.

Looks like your harness may be younger than 1983.

BagusJeep lives in Bali with far too many 4x4s:
1981 CJ7 258ci - Bagusjeep
1984 CJ7 258ci - Puthijeep
1981 J20 258ci - Gladys
1951 Willys CJ3A/MB/M38 - Little Willy
1995 Cherokee 4.0 - CHEROKEE
1980 Land Rover Series III 109" troop carrier - ROVER

Yes, thank you. There had to be another end to that wiper switch plug.

I have wiring diagrams from FSMs from m 1979, 1980 and 1981. All of them show the older connector not the half round connector for the CJ and the half round connector for the J20. In 1983 they used the half round connector on the CJ too.
