What the heck is this?.. part ID help.

I'm working on a heater box for a friend and some parts were in a ziplock bag including this part. Not sure where it goes. I think I've seen one before but not sure. A picture of where/how it fits would be great.

Thanks all!

Looks like an axle rod for one of the flaps.

That's what I was thinking too. Are all of them accounted for, Bob?

What year is the heater box? I rebuilt my 1980 version this winter and none of the parts match the one you have.

Maybe rod from earlier version of the heater Box? 1976-78?

The rod does not match the later years

Keith hit the nail on the head, here is a pic from my heater box restoration. It can be seen in the background.

Im looking back through my tear down pics to see where it was.

Its actually from the fresh air box, I didnt take a picture but this link has a good rebuild guide I followed. It doesn't look like a door shaft because of the ends, if i remember correctly it goes in the end of the plenum as a spacer of sorts. It gets clamped between both sides of the box to keep it a certain size above the blower resistor.

Here i found a picture of the tip of one of the ends. The adhesive in your picture if from the seal they used on the fresh air box. the spade shaped ends get trapped in between the box halves and the bar/rod goes across the opening. I have no idea what it really does.

In the picture below, the end is circled in red that i could see with the box still closed.

As many times I had that off, I knew there was a brace in there. Just never really looked closer.

Mystery solved.

Yeah your right. Now I remember seeing that when I had mine out 15 years ago.

Upper plenum support rod that I would think helps support the two half's and resistor pack when you push or pull the plug off.

Way to go houstoniancj... that's it. I too remember seeing that part many years ago. I am working on the lower heater box and not the upper box so I will not need to do anything with it. Big thanks to you and everyone else that chimed in to help. Gotta love this JF site!
