What do think? (gears)

I run a 401 in my CJ with a 727 transmission and 4.56 gears and 35" tires.

As it is setup, I can turn the 35's over in second gear on pavement if I want to. I am about to build a Dana 44 for the jeep and I am thinking about raising the gear ratio to 3.73's. According to all the numbers, I should be good and have better street manners.

The jeep is mainly a sunny day jeep with the occasional trail ride. No rock crawling so I am going to run a Trac-Lok in it and an Aussie in the front. It seems like 3.73's could give me good street RPM's and utilize my 3 gears better. When offroad and in 4x4, I should be good too.

Tranny is geared 2.45/1.45/1.00.

What say you?

Well, I will tell you about mine. I have a 383 with a built Turbo 350 and full time case on it. I run 4:10's and love it for my set up. My bias grab more than the radials with 35's. I run both street and trails with alot of rocks here. With a 3 speed auto with that much power, 3:73's should be good for street manners on mainly flats, mild hills. Fuzz will chime in and tell me it doesn't matter.
But if you live in an area with alot of steep inclines, I would stay with 4:10's or lower and see how you like it 1st. Less torque and gas to turn the wheels IMO.

85' CJ7 Laredo, 383 GM, Turbo 350, NP 203. SOA, 2" frame lift, 34" TSL swampers, Dana 30 open, AMC 20 w/ detroit locker, 4:10's, 1 Piece Mosers, 35" boggers to abuse when needed.

CJ7, 401 w/904 here... When I replaced the Model 20 with the Dana 44, I built it with 3.73s for use with 33's and I think it is geared a bit tall. It is great on the road, for cruising. I would think that for 35's it would be worse.

It is way better than the 3.07's it had before!!
