Tow Hooks

STJP asked me some time ago about the tow hooks on the front of my CJ7s following a Windshield Frame post where I included a picture of the front of one.

They were supplied in Indonesia as standard with CJ7s in the early 80s and are, as far as I can tell, Jeep part no. J536 2504-5

Well, John asked me to keep my eyes open for them and I spotted on lazada.com in Malaysia a set of "China OEM" brand tow hooks, sold by Carpartsmy.. They were roughly US$13 each. I bought all the stock of 3 to go on my 1951 CJ3A.

This price undercuts the weak looking hooks from Rugged Ridge by a lot.

Waiting to see what they are like, i distrust the chicomm.

So, as I suspected, the ChiComm have supplied a part that does not fit the description. Where is the chrome????:

Described as a 10,000 lb capacity hook it came with 2 No. M12 Grade 4.8 bolts x 60mm lg (25mm shank) and 2 washers. In shear they will take about 2,900lbs each. Do the maths.................

8.8 grade bolts will take about 7,300 lbs each, so they need changing or that hook will become a missile.

Distance of bolt holes is 35mm.

To be honest, pretty much what I expected from the Chicomm. I was going to paint them so not worried about lack of chrome, but they will need to be tested somehow when the new bolts are found..

Bagus does McMaster Carr ship to you? They would have exactly what you need for hardware. https://www.mcmaster.com/ I use them for everything and have always had excellent service. I don't trust the Chicomms either!!

Check out these tow hooks:

https://www.mcmaster.com/tow-hooks

For an easy towing connection, mount these hooks to a bumper or trailer. Maximum trailer weight is the total weight being towed.

Note: Capacity is reduced 25% in off-road use.

impressive website and good prices, but how do you know they are not the same Chi Comm product?

This is my problem, the supply chain around the world is corrupted with cheap Chinese crap. I have worked in China and i know how it happens, very attractive pricing on sub standard parts leads to importers believing there is a profit to be made, goods are not tested, exporter cuts corners and the Chinese demand payment before shipping. Resellers in good faith pass on substandard products. Result is resources wasted, when a little bit more care could have produced a good product.

There is nothing to stop a workshop in Wuhan from taking McMaster's nice drawings and casting 20,000 tow hooks of pig iron, slapping some paint on and rating them at 10,000 lbs for export. Someone dies, no comeback.

i am going to proceed and then try to pull out a tree stump under controlled conditions.

Yours may be mounted correctly. Here is the page from the parts manual. There are two additional bolts for each hook, but they may also be holding on the bumper. In which case mine are set back further on the frame.

You also have the tow eyes.

McMaster-Carr sells high quality items and have been using them for both business and personal purchases for close to 40 years. Never had an item that was cheaply made from them, all good quality even down to the tinniest of hardware.

The hooks in the Jeep parts manual are like what Bagus has and always wondered how they utilized existing holes in both the frame and bumper and the spacing between the holes. Automotive manufactures typically use preexisting holes in frames, body structures that have plugs in them or some sort of guide outline so when an vehicle owner buys an approved accessory, it bolts directly on without having to drill any additional holes or a supplied template is included with the accessory for mounting. That's the importance of the hole spacing of the hook which Bagus points out to be 35mm or 1-3/8".

I don't know what the spacing is on my CJ offhand since I'm currently not near it, but there is a guide line on the front frame plastic overlay that gets removed for the installation of of said Tow Hook. I don't have any closeup photo of the front frame overlay at the moment either.

I think the Jeep CJ tow hook bolt center to center is 1 3/8". McMaster-Carr Tow Hook # 2589T9 specifications:

For Maximum Trailer Weight 10,000 lbs.
Overall
Depth 3 1/4"
Height 5"
Material Steel
Hook Opening Width 1 5/8"
Mounting Fasteners Included No
Mounting Hole
Diameter 1/2"
Center-to-Center 1 3/8"
Mounting Plate Thickness 1"

https://www.mcmaster.com/2589t9

etrailer lists the same dimension 1 3/8" hole center to center for the Rampage Tow Hook - https://www.etrailer.com/question-369437.html

Nice reference drawing. Interesting that they only show the front bolt...guess you have to stop the illustration somewhere.

Actually, those are my home-made version that work with my tow bar. But they work well for shackles, too.
