Thought You Guys Might like to See This-My 4.0 Head/Fi Install

Hey guys. Aside from finding someone to make a custom exhaust with a place to mount my o2 bung, mounting the air intake, and figuring out to attach my new xj ps pump to my CJ7 Ps box the Mpfi is installed and running.

I am not going to go into super detail. I just wanted to add a reference on here for people considering the swap to look at. full thread is here:
4.0 Head, MPFI, and Serpentine on my 82 258 - Jeep-CJ Forums

Heres the basic gist of the swap:
The template- 1982 CJ7 Limited 258/ax15/d300
1991 Serpentine belt setup
1995 4.0 HO head
1994 Xj Auto wiring harness
cps is mounted to the ax15
vss came from a partout 1991 wrangler(this is a hybrid electronic/cable driven vss and as far as I know the only model it can be found in is the 91 yj otherwise hesco sells it for some big $$$$)
Contour dual fan
and
hesco electric fuel pump

All the systems are run through the original XJ PDC

here are some pics of the process.

Good bye old 1980s stuff

My dad figured out how to solve the problem we had connecting the powersteering hose to the original powersteering box. Basically we got the hose for a 90s cherokee and cut the hose in half then cut the old hose in half and used a barb connector with some hose clamps to connect them together. I didn't think it would work but barring any better ideas we tried it and it seems to not be leaking in some preliminary test around the yard turning the wheel and such. Now we just got to get the exhaust done up.

As long as it's the low pressure side. I think that would work with no issues.

You should be able to get a place like o'rileys to make u a new hose. But on the high side I see some big issues.

Well guys Turns out that the PS high pressure line from a 82 waggy was the right length and had the ends at the right angles to clear the rad and the ps pump. So power steering for me

Since you can have a cold air intake, the intake would be better on the passenger side. The air above your exhaust manifold will be very warm.

Vibration? Bump steer? Wandering? Read the article (sticky) on Steering, suspension, and driveline.

ThisGuyUknow, Quick question, the third picture, the stud/bolt above the power steering pump going thought the bracket, Is that where your smog pump mounted? Looks like the ps pump has the double pulley so I am assuming it had a smog pump at one time. Thanks for your help.

I have a 86 258 and wanting to do the junkyard TBI but must remain emission legal. I went down and talked to the State inspector and he said I can do it no problem, BUT the Jeep ecm controls the pulse air system (One stupid little valve) The GM ecm cant so they will allow me to do it and remove the pulse air system but must replace it with a smog pump. This is a federal law not the state. The only one now that you can dump both is the Howell system because they put up the 1/4 to 1/2 million to have the CARB certified 50 state legal. I have been collecting up the parts for the smog pump with power steering like a 79 CJ had, but I can't find many pics that show the pump mounting brackets.

The problem come into play with keeping the 258. I can add anything ( map, icm, tps ect) and replace anything for same or better, newer technology ( carb for throttle body) But, I cant delete anything not getting replaced. The pulse air system must stay, and they understand that the GM ecm can not make it work so I can remove it and replace it with a smog pump.

I can swap in any motor I want as long as it is the same year or newer. Gm 4.3, 350, hell 454 or 4.0 mpfi as long as everything that was on that motor is transferred to it's new home.

It made me mad, but I have been looking at 4.3s and can get a free, good running 350 with TBI, but they all have a smog pump also, and it will have to stay. It this point I am going to put in a rebuilt 258 and go ahead with the TBI and add the smog pump.
