Cj T176 Trouble

I am trying to remove my shifter from my T176 Transmission, but i don't know how to get it out. Any help at all would be appreciated.

Remove the rubber boot
Push down on the metal cover
Turn counter clockwise 1/4 turn (while pushing down against the spring tension).
It should release and lift out
I have found laying an open Channel Lock pliers across the top helps provide leverage for downward force and turning

Pictured below is an aftermarket (cheap and flimsy) cover to help you understand the mechanism.

See page 34 for an exploded diagram. Pressing in slightly on the transmission control housing cap while twisting counter clockwise will release the spring retainer and spring, and allow you to remove the shift lever.
