I really want to lift my cj. more or less for the trails but also like to drive it there too. i was wondering what kit should i buy or peice it togeather myself? I would like to stay around 800 bucks. Im a novice Jeep owner and I want to put the lift on myself to get better Acquainted with my jeep.

How large tire are you planning on running?

PS: What Hillsdale do you live in?

CJs don't have a slip yoke like Wranglers.

Vibration? Bump steer? Wandering? Read the article (sticky) on Steering, suspension, and driveline.

For a Narrow Trac CJ and normal Michigan trails, where you may not see extreme articulation, I'd suggest a 2.5"-3" lift.

Ya know: BDS is right there in Coldwater: http://www.bds-suspension.com/php/ProductSelect.php That's where I picked my 2.5" lift up:

I've got 32x11.50x15 tires, but there appears to be enough room to stuff a 33" tire under there.

Can't give you a clue about handling, as I'm (after 12 years) still not 'on the road'. I can tell you that there was very little sag, perhaps less than 1" in the front when I installed the drivetrain and winch/bumper. I'm sure it will 'soften' a bit with use.

There was no need for a dropped pitman arm.

I've got the BDS 2.5" and 0.5" shackle on my '85 CJ7 running 32x11.5, here's my take. I like the warranty and that it's USA. I've taken it off road a few times and it does fine, however there is little to no flex (don't think CJs were meant to flex semi-stock or w/o a SOA). The ride on the streets is ok, it's a CJ. BDS customer service is great, and that's a HUGE selling point for me. Hope this helps some.

'85 CJ7, 258, T5, 32x11.50x15 BFG ATs, 3" BDS lift (springs and shackles), 4.56 Dana30/AMC20, powertrax locker.
