Question Solenoid Draining Battery?

Good Day everyone,

After ready several posts and trying serval things I need some advice.

My Jeep battery will die if I don't drive it every week so I know its not a large drain.

I have disconnected the negative cable and put a volt meter between the cable and battery. I get a reading of 12.73v If I remove the power to the radio that keeps the clock running I get 7.2 volts. If I remove the power lead from the solenoid that goes to the fuse box I also get 7.2v If I remove the one that goes to the alternator I get 5.1v. Shouldn't I be getting 0 at this point? Its strictly the solenoid only at this point. I could replace the solenoid but its less than 3 month old and I replaced it trying to fix this issue. Otherwise jeep runs and starts fine.

Shane

You should set your meter to amperage and look for an amp draw between the circuits not just a voltage

HI

I dough its the solenoid .. only wire that should be hot at the solenoid would be the big one from the battery.. one wire (I) from the solenoid goes to the coil to supply a full 12 V for starting. the other wire (S) comes from the start posistion on the key switch to tell the solenoid to engage the starter.

Do you have any accessories hooked to it somewhere.. stereo amp. extra lights.. or does it
have a dome light or under dash light that may be left on??

Put an amp draw meter on it and start pulling fuse's

good luck

The only wire I have hooked up is the large cable from the battery and the large cable to the starter. All the small wires are disconnected.

Hi ??? What engages the starter?? the small wire post marked with an "S" is what engages the solenoid to engage the starter? and the "I" post would only have power when the starter is engaged..

good luck
