Rubber boot ?

Folks, what is the name of the rubber boot that covers the spindle nut at axle end where the break drum goes over? I can’t seem to find them because don’t know their exact name. Anyone?

Awesome, that’s it. Are those supposed to be packed with grease? On mine, one side was missing. When I took it off the nut was slightly rusted but the uncovered one was obviously worse. Seems like it should be packed with grease?

I have no idea. CJs are new to me, sorry. I just looked at my TSM, it makes no reference other than "remove dust cap" when talking about the rear axle. I don't think I would PACK them. That just doesn't sound right.

If I were you, I'd just wire brush the rust you see, and maybe brush a light coat of grease on the end of the shaft. That's just me though..... someone else probably knows better.

GREASE CAP, 2.5" or 4.12" diameter?

It is confusingly also called a Dust Cap in the service manual, so you may find it under either name.

the only grease is inside, before the Axle Nut. the caps on top/ outside of the Axle Nut are not filled with grease. Their function is to keep dust and water away from the grease.

Really, a photo makes it much easier to see which one you have.

Looks like a 4.12" Grease Cap

There are a pair of nice used ones on ebay for $30. New ones are $22 but Omix Ada parts suck when compared to used ones. Interesting they have 'Cover Rear Axle" written inside.

The Omix or Crown axle dust cap are the ones you want for your 1985 CJ-7. Made of plastic, like OEM version, and last a long time. I replaced my originals in 2007 and they still look new today and are only $7.99 a piece.

Find them here: https://www.quadratec.com/products/52414_01.htm

But they are out of stock and will probably take several months to get them.

No grease gets packed in there as they are only a "dust cap". If you want to prevent rust or keep moisture away, just spray with WD-40 or Fluid Film. Even with the cap removed for yearly tire rotation shows no sign of rust and I never have sprayed it with anything.

If the caps are on nation wide backorder, you can just replace them with 1 piece axle shafts...

Garage
Some local parts stores have them, out on aisle (such as the help section) may be generic, shallower or deeper.

You must insure the inner diameter is correct, as the store will not have catalog applications for those.

I found one on eBay (Omix-ADA). It’s on its way.

Keith, what size are those Allen head retainer screws? All my Phillips head screws were either badly stripped or broken off. I just used one for now after drilling and tapping but would like to replace with those Allen head style when I put on the dust cap!

S.S. Hex Drive 1/4-20 x 1/2"L or 5/8"L Flat Head screws. I forget what the length is but just long enough threads to poke out the back of the axle flange a tiny bit if at all.
