Power steering swap

So the other day I purchased an 84 Cj7 with a four banger for a whopping 600.00. Got her home and running and took her for a rip. The manual steering is a nightmare to say the least. Now I also have an 85 with the 258 which is torn down to the frame. The frame and tub on the 84 are in much better condition so parts will be going onto that one. So I checked part numbers and all the part numbers for the 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder are the same for the power steering components. Thereís also already one bracket on the four cylinder as well as two belt pulleys on the motor. Iím thinking I should be able to take my power steering system outta my 85 258 and put it into the 84 4 banger. Anyone ever done this?

should work. you may find the steering column lower end no longer matches, but as you have spares it will no matter too much.

Before you do the swap, just check the frame mount is not cracked. There are braces to beef it up.

yes, I have done that swap twice.

Parts needed to go from manual to power steering on a late CJ using the AMC 4cyl.
Power gear box, 4 cyl high pressure hose, low pressure hose hardline at box, power steering shaft (or just the lower coupler), pump with 4 piece brackets, PS belt, bolts, etc.

The center brace of the steering box brackets is not used. The pump bolts up to the engine just like it was a 6cyl. All the same. The upper steering shaft is the same, the lower coupler is different. You will need a 4 cyl PS pressure hose as the 6 cyl one is too short and bent different.

I recommend while swapping gear boxes you get a HD box mount from someplace like Mountain Offroad. May be a little pricey, but I had my OEM stamped steel ones crack, break around mounting holes, etc. Not something you want to happen, and since it is apart, now is the time to do it.

Any picture of a 4cyl line beside a 6cyl line? I'm curious to the differences.

I am wanting to move my steering box forward 1.5", and curious if a 4cyl line would give the length needed.

Rick....When I put my Saginaw pump on my 5.0 EFI motor I purchased 2 brand new Gates brand lines for an I6 motor from Rock Auto and used a small drill press vice to straighten the last couple of bends out of the metal part of the line. I silver soldered -6AN male fittings on the ends. I used Russell Powerflex power steering hose and fittings to make custom lines.

You can find the hose and fittings cheaper if you look around.

I like the ability to make the line exactly as I need them while I am working on the Jeep. If one ever damages the line, you can reuse the fittings on new line. It is a very nice system.

You could always have a line shop bend a custom metal line and put that special O-ring flare on it, but that would probably be expensive and I always seem to have problems getting someone to make something exactly the way I want. To be happy, I almost always have to do it myself.
