My Megasquirt efi and turbo build

Well I have finally got the time and money to start working on my 84 cj7 4cyl again. It developed a bad knock last spring and has sat in the garage ever since. I thought I would do efi and a small turbo at the same time as rebuild. I will be keeping this thing as stock looking as possible and I'm going to try to do this clean and simple. Today I started building an engine run stand so I can do all my wireing and fab work outside of the rig. I may even try to find another running 2.5 to use as a test engine.

Here is my stand. I ran out of some steel so I got around to pulling the transfer case and tranny. I just need to finish up the motor mounts and maybe a gauge panel.

Engine out and mounted up on the stand. Next is to steam clean the engine and see what is actually wrong with it. Ordered my efi stuff as well.

This sounds like a great project. What kind of turbo will you be using?

I am not sure yet. I am reading up on turbos right now, so hopefully I will figure out what will work best for my application. I really am pretty unfamiliar with turbos on this small stuff. My guess is if I called turbonetics or garret they could probably set me up with what I need. I guess Im kinda waiting to find out whats wrong with my engine. If it needs some major components I may end up buying components that can take some decent boost. If its something simple, I will probably just keep it limited to around 6-7 psi. So... what I am saying is I am waiting to see what kind of rotating assembly I have before I order a turbo.

All steam cleaned up and ready to take apart

Found the culprit. Piston was seized to the rod too.

All taken apart and ready to head off to the machine shop.

I'll be watching this build for sure. Really like the MegaSquirt stuff!

Check Waytek Wiring and Terminal Supply for electrical stuff. There are other places too.

How much boost do you plan on running?

Waytech and Delcity are both good supply places that each carry a little bit different stuff.

Thanks.

Im not entirely sure yet. I just got pricing for some forged pistons and rods from 505 performance. If I go that route I may try to run 10+ Psi, if not ill probably limit it to around 6-7 psi. I just need to figure out all the machining and balancing prices before I decide to go the forged route. I just don't want to end up polishing a turd with good money. Im ok with a stock rebuild and small boost. This project is more of a hands on learning experience for EFI and turbo than it is for performance.

Garage
I would probably find another source. 505 has horrible reviews and poor customer service. There are numerous threads on their shoddy craftsmanship and pore customer service

Awesome pics! The microsquirt comes with a nicer box than mine. I just had to return the wideband sensor (it was borrowed), so I purchased and AEM and I'm going to wire it to the Megasquirt, after I do that I may be able to help you install your 02 thingy.

I managed to rev mine up to 2500 RPM's today, my timing was excessively retarded and it was hurting engine temps. I will tweak more tomorrow night too much midnight oil for today.
