My 1985 CJ-7 time travel machine

I had my middle kid Zach, who is an Army Aviator stationed in El Paso TX, go look at this Jeep. He looked it over, haggled the price down a little, and towed it home from Santa Fe, to his house in El Paso. He and his wife have thoroughly cleaned & pressure washed it. He has fixed the radio, and is going to do some other items before I fly out there with my youngest son Nick, to drive it home to NC, during Spring Break.

Drum roll please......

I have big plans for this Jeep. Its a low mileage rust free 1985 CJ-7, red of course. It is pretty much all stock, but the Edelbrock Fuel Injection, Radio, bumper mounted Tow Bar, and some sort of fabricated Tow Hitch. headlight and running light screens, and several extra holes in the body for snaps, from a soft top I suppose, but I will make them go away.

Big plans? Personally, I hope that doesn’t involve a big lift, big tires and body mods but mostly cleaning it up and making it run better.

Extra holes from now unused snaps or are you thinking of removing all the soft top snaps?

Yep, up here in Syracuse, the only jeeps that look that good are fiberglass.

I had one just like it in high school. Mine was a red 83 with a 4 speed. Your lucky. Here in Houston, if you can find one in that kind of condition, it would cost upwards of 20k.

A red auto... quite rare.

Looks like a good basis for a father son project.

BagusJeep lives in Bali.

This is why I call it a time machine. I bought a new 1986 CJ-7 in Mobile AL. I drove it to Port Angeles WA the summer of 1986. I was active duty Coast Guard, young and single, and I was pretty rough on that Jeep. I ended up selling it in 1992, and have missed it ever since. Last year I bought a 2017 JKU Sahara, and I really like it, but it didn't take long to realize I really wanted another CJ-7, here it is...My time machine.

I put a limited slip differential and 411 gears in the Dana 44, and 410 gears in the open Dana 30. I put some 31" mud Radials on it and had a lot of fun wheeling in Port Angeles WA. In 1987 I entered the local mud bog competition, and I won the Mud Drags, and came in second place in the Roundy Round circuit race. There was a three way tie for first place that day, and I won the six cylinder class.

That was a nice Jeep. My buddy had a 1960 Willy's CJ-5 with a 327 under the hood. His was beat up, but it always went further than I could. He used to tease me because mine was new, like having an LJ now compared to a CJ-7. Funny how time changes things.

This is what my new 1985 CJ-7 is going to look like, after I do a little body work and slap some paint on it.

Please post pictures and updates on your trip east. I'm considering a cross country trip via US 64 from the Outer Banks to its western terminus in the Four Corners.
