I just started a rebuild on my 85 CJ and i'm wondering if its worth the money to buy the MSD digital ignition system or just run a hotter coil and better distributor. Is there any real benefits or draw backs to the digital ignition box? If no real benefits to the box, what would yall suggest to do beside a team rush upgrade?

Only you can decide if it's "worth it".
The benefits are a stronger more reliable ignition system. The OEM replacement boxes are junk.
There are no drawbacks that I have found.

I just disabled the ECU and added an Accel SuperCoil to fire champion copper cores via a brass terminal stock distributor cap back in 2000. I use the BBD carb and ported vacuum for timing also. It runs well, passes emissions and gave the 258 a stable 22 US mpg highway on ethanol free 91 or 92 octane gas, even better with the 4.0. Had better things to spend money on.
