Tire carrier is coming along. I could not get the old bolts out of the old brackets. Apparently Jeep welded them in there from the factory, so I brought them to work where I have access to a press and some other heavier tools and I will get them out tonight and finish assembly tomorrow. Pics below:

Jeep Club Cruise In is in Easley Saturday night.

Upstate Legends. https://www.upstatelegendsjeepclub.com/

Club has members of all ages with all types of Jeeps from old CJs to JKs. It has a large number of CJs.

No dues but you do need to ask to join. Most of their information is passed on their Facebook page and you have to join it also.

Tire carrier is complete. There is absolute not flex on the tub now. It could probably comfortably swing a 37 if I wanted it to. The bumper and the upright piece take most of the force now. The upright can be unbolted from the tub and then it and the bumper can be removed as one piece, or the entire setup can be split into separate pieces. Just used some scrap metal to make it. It isn't complicated, but gets the job done.

Still need to find a 33 and a matching wheel, but at least the tires is a BFG and wheel is black. Should do for now.

GREAT SCORE TODAY...I answered an add in one of the Jeep Facebook groups that I am in about a Bestop Soft top hardware kit. Turns out, it was connected to a full 1980 CJ7 that a guy was parting out. So this morning I went and picked up a few things from it. I got the top kit, a perfectly pristine passenger OEM fender, a hood that is in better shape than mine, an original Spartan horn, OEM windshield wiper arms, new windshield hold down knobs, all for 260 bucks. And to top it all off, I now know where a plethora of other parts are if I need them. Hood and fender are not pictured, but they are perfect. Hood ha a little bit of rust, but nothing major. At least it isn't creased like mine. I am going to have them painted soon and put them on.

I was looking at your spare tire carrier, as I'm wanting a way to reinforce the carrier on my CJ7. I considered attaching to the bumper as you did, but was worried that since the body is isolated form the frame with the rubber cushions there might be a problem. I assume any flex encountered would result in a different movement between the two, possibly stressing the attachment points to the body. I've tried searching the forum for "tire carrier reinforcement", but weren't able to find any threads. I'm pretty sure this has come up before, but yours is the first I stumbled on! Good luck with your build, it looks great so far. I only wish I could geat as much done as you have in a relatively short time frame!

I do realize that the body may flex one way, and tire carrier flex the other way. This Jeep won't see much offroading, so I doubt there will ever be enough stresses put on them that something may be damaged. My carrier was flexing the tub in and would have caused it to crack eventually. I will get an actual tire carrier sooner or later, but at the moment I am happy with how this turned out.

Your carrier turned out nicely. I've seen roll cage tie-ins that made the body and frame attached solid like your tire mount but have not heard of any negative effects. It will be interesting to see what you experience later on. The nice part of making things yourself is you already know how to change it if need be. You'd be set if you had a new set of door strikers

Yeah, time will tell. It is much better than the way it was. Tub would have cracked soon if I had of left it alone. It doesn't look too bad for something made from some scrap metal.

I agree. I swear, Jeep's carrier design leaves a little to be desired. Mine was already cracked & torn on the driver's side. The PO had bondoed it up, 'course that didn't work, so he had just removed the carrier. I'll bet you're right about your's being fine, especially if most of it's life will be on the street. Maybe I'll go that way too. It's not like I'm going rock crawling with my 4 squirrel powerhouse!

You could also place rubber bushings between the bumper and the vertical support that is bolted to the sheet metal. The rubber could support the weight and flex a little when required, like the body bushings do, Im just thinking out loud here. Either way your solution is better than what you had to start with. Nothing wrong with thinking outside the box.
