Junk Yard Seat Swaps for the CJ7 - What is a direct bolt in? Post up your pics/story

Before I get slammed for not using the search feature let me preface this thread by saying that I did.

I found this link:

https://www.jeepforum.com/wiki/index..../YJ_Seat_swaps

Then I read this thread:

https://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f12/r...u-used-490426/

The issue I have is that the seats listed as "direct bolt in" for YJ/CJ applications may or may not be correct as a few listed in the wiki link are disputed in the thread. That and the thread is all YJ owners and I have no idea if the YJ and CJ seat hardware is identical / interchangeable.

What I would like to know is what seats from other vehicles are a "direct bolt in" for my 85 CJ7? I know there has to be a lot of you CJ guys on here that have done this swap before.- Lets here your story and see your pics.

Thanks to all that contribute.

Not the junkyard but I found a Bestop TrailMaxII out on the floor for $100. Fits just like it is supposed to.

The problem I have with new aftermarket seats is that they sit higher due to thicker bottom sections and they are either too firm OR they are cheap and break down compared to the OEM seats. I use oem seats whenever I can, but the age of them and finding them is getting hard. I think the Fiero seats look good, but I don't know first hand.

Can't help much with the direct bolt in. I know for a fact Chevy S-10, and Pontiac Gran Prix seats require fabrication for a CJ.

The Bestops seems to be made well and not much if any thicker.

I used a set of old '77 Chrysler Codoba seats. They are power, and swivel for exit. Plus I'm a sucker for "Rich Corinthian Leather".

I've also learned that sometimes... when people don't agree with you .... its best to hold them down and kidney punch them till they agree with you

whats funny, is its Bestop that Im talking about. I have a pair of lowbacks in my CJ-6 and I feel like a kid in a high chair. The bottom would support a 600 lb person and the back has the frame work showing through and no support. Can't wait to get rid of them and there almost new....

After I built the bracket, my junkyard seat bolts up directly! Not sure what you are hoping to find in a JY that is a direct bolt-in??

Take that what fits tread for what it is worth. I have a set of 96 Ford Explorer power seats in my 86 and there anything but bolt in as it says. Redrill a couple of holes and take the power base off, yes they will fit on the CJ risers BUT I am 5'8 and had to bend my head or I hit the hard top. Way to tall. Had to fab up mounts for them so I can use the power, Love them but far cry from bolt in with a slight mod.

Actually I was hoping to find a direct bolt in as it states on the wiki page but - its apparent thats not going to happen. The way I see it is if you are going to have to mod/fab why limit your selection. Just find the seats you like best and take it from there.

For those suggesting new seats - I am not really asking about those in this thread. Was hoping to find a direct bolt in from the salvage yard or see pics and hear stories from those that have fab'd up some nice salvage seats.

I picked up some seats from a '00 Grand Am last summer, and they were NOT bolt in. The bolts were all off by 1/2" or so. Easy enough to make adapter brackets, but I was still annoying.

The impression I got from reading lots of threads on the subject is that the J-platform seats USUALLY bolt right it, but not always. For whatever reason, maybe GM sourced different seats? or mixed with other platforms, or between the 4-door and 2-door? who knows. So, it doesnt hurt to measure your seats first.. then go to the junkyard to measure before you make the effort to pull them out.

I just got a set of Grand Cherokee seats from the pull apart this morning. They are not a direct fit, but making brackets to work with the risers I have in my CJ so it will bolt in should be fairly easy. The boltholes aren't that far off.

I currently have Chevy Cavalier seats in my CJ. Not direct fit. Had to fab up brackets. What I discovered is car seats are designed to sit lower to the floor and your legs are generally straighter when driving than CJ seats that are more like sitting on a bench with your legs more bent at the knees. The padding on the front of car seats make it uncomfortable to drive for long lengths of time because of this. I think small truck and SUV seats would be more comfortable because they have you sitting in the same position as you would in the CJ. The Cavalier seats are nice in that they have padded 'wings' on the side of the seat and back that hold you in place when off road, but the padding in the front of the seat makes my legs go to sleep. I will be replacing them soon.

i had to cut and weld the sliding rail to get some 94 s-10 blazer seats to fit. and with the half doors and their thick plastic crap door panels, they rub. but, they are comfy and work great.
