I just finished this upgrade on my 86 CJ-7, I built the entire wiring setup from scratch. Only took about two days to get it all installed but now I have the stupidest problem... My new LED headlights even though they are 7" lights aren't being held in place by the silver retaining bevel that comes stock. Is there supposed to be a retaining ring that goes on before the silver bevel?

I believe it is that 3 screw retaining ring you mention. Does it not fit the new lights?

I just looked on Quadratec and I am missing the 3 screw retaining ring. It's somewhere in my garage I just have to find it or order new ones from Quadratec

86renegade, could you post some pictures of the LEDs and the light they give off?

Is that Narva bulb a 100Watt Low beam with 55watt high ?

the Osram Night Breaker line of bulbs is also an excellent upgrade over the usual stuff.

Thumbs up

Very nice write up! Great Mod to add to this new CJ project. I just have one question for you Matt. Did the lens itself, not bulb, fit good inside the chrome metal headlamp retainer ring that has three screws holding it?

Thanks!!

Mopar,

Everything fit without any modification. Plug and play.

Thanks for the kind words.

Matt

I got a kit from Amazon and need some clarification. Maybe I got the wrong kit. I have a 82 and 85 under hood wiring harness in storage and would like to upgrade one of them for the light upgrade. Which wires do I need to cut to install another OEM plug to make this work?
First pic is of diagram, 2nd is of the new harness.
The ones in yellow are the ones I'm asking about.

Don't need to cut anything.
That male connector you underlined in yellow, plugs into the female connector that was originally plugged into one of the headlight. Pick either one.

Read step 4 on your instructions again.

Matt, why do you have a passenger's side air breather hose connected?

That's the factory configuration for a V8.

The boots also help to keep dust out of the head light reflector's interior shell.
Just got done wiping out the interiors of ours last night.
