Identify This Transmission Please

Iím tired of playing Google roulette with this one, and Qudratecís Knowledge pages donít seem to cover this one. Too old? Borg Warner all over the cases, it has the look of a T5 trans with the shifter tower, but whatís fooling me is that it says cast iron cases.

That looks just like my T-5, and the housing is completely aluminum (with the exception of the shift plate cover that is). Or could be a T-4 depending on the shift pattern (lacks the O-drive). Confused a little- Q-tech is saying the case should be iron? Or is your case iron?

Novak indicates that the case should be Al, and mine matches their description spot on.

T5...looks like a 13-52 casting number to me. Look under Borg on the driver side below the shifter...if it says 13-52...T5. 13-51...T4.

Just double checked on my Scrambler T4.

they are aluminium light car transmissions. Iron cases do not need all the stiffeners

First, this is a CL ad in my area.

A couple of things rang my bell and I wasn't sure what to think.

Cast iron doesn't match up. Every T5 I've seen is aluminum case. The QTec site doesn't show the shifter tower so I wasn't sure. However, the casting numbers were out of the QTec range as well. I figured one of you would either confirm my suspicions or add to my angst.

I already have 2 T5's sitting on the shelves with no prospect of using them, this one is going to pass into history for me.

He probably saw the rust on the t-case mounting flange and though it was cast iron.

probably from the t-case.

Save one for me one, Trailhead! While I certainly recognize the weaknesses of the T-5, I've enjoyed mine, especially with the short, crisp throws of the aftermarket Hurst shifter, and having that 5th gear for highway travel is awesome. Our hills are tiny around here, relatively speaking. Although I'm sure others have had different experiences, in my twenty years of driving one, proper maintenance, correct gearing/tire size, and obviously, not pushing it with a V8 or hopping rocks, etc., have kept it from exploding!

However, I'm a realist and there's always that first time, hence, my humble request for you to 'save' one for me. Haha

Look at the case around the output shaft. It's obviously aluminum.

I have an NP435 that someone wrote T18 on the aluminum top cover with a Sharpie. It's still an NP435, despite a prior owner not knowing any better.
