Cool How BIG can I go? Tires, people!!

Just curious as to what everyone thinks regarding tires on a 1975 CJ-5. Original engine, tranny, and currently running Kumho 31x10.5x15 tires. I'm considering moving up to a 33" tire, but not sure what that will do to the acceleration, how it will affect the tranny with its gearing setup, and overall ride condition (trembling, wobble, etc). I "think" it may have a lift on it, but to be honest, I can't be certain. I've attached a pic for all you experts to impart some knowledge on me if you like. If anyone thinks some closer pics would help, just let me know and I can post those as well. Thanks in advance to everyone!

With the 6 cyl, I'm guessing you have the T-14 3 speed trans and 3.73 gears in the axles. IF that is correct and looking at the tire clearance in the side profile pic, I'd stay with 31s. Going taller on the tires without an axle gear change will increase leverage in the drive train.....more sluggish

It looks lifted, Bagusjeep sits on 31" tyres on stock suspension and yours looks higher but not much.

31" are as big as you should go on stock suspension and axles, the extra 10" in rim circumference over stock does not make it bog and the extra inch in clearance is welcome for the low cost. If you put on a true 33" tyre you had better check the axle ratios first, it will take them but IMHO the sluggishness is not worth the extra inch.

Stick with the 31"s unless you want to lift it and re-gear the diffs.

it isn't a race car so put em on and have fun. if they rub a bit then that is just a good excuse to get a bigger lift. as long as the new tires are also a 'c' load range, the ride won't change when the tires are inflated properly.

I like the way it looks in the pic with the size tires it has. It will be surprisingly capable.

Figure out what gears it has. The standard gears in '75 were 3.73s, but 4.27s were optional. I found 33s to be a great match with the 4.27s that my '75 had.

You'll need more lift than it has to avoid rubbing the rear fender opening and they will rub on the frame with the steering turned all the way right or left.

Here?s a pic of my cj7. With the new 32? tire next to the current 31?. Has a couple inch body lift and that?s it and came with 31?s. Over the this winter planned on new tires and wheels. Decided to go a 32x11.5r15 as I thought it would look just a bit better and bigger but no issues. I was really surprised at how much larger it was. I opted to return them and stick with a new set of 31s. Didn?t want any rubbing anywhere and messing my nice tub up plus my drivetrain will be happier lol

Awesome, thanks for the feedback and pictures everyone! Seems like it'll be much less painful to just stick with a new set of 31's along with some matte black wheels Y'all are all bosses!

Jeeptastic,

Bear in mind the advertised size of some tires aren't the actual size. For example, my new BFG ATs are advertised at 32"x11.5". They actually measured 30.5" tall fully inflated.
