Horn Button Plastic Cover

I have an ‘81 CJ7 with the original AMC horn button. The clear plastic lens that’s over the AMC logo is yellowed. Has anyone had any luck refinishing it with a plastic polish?

wet sand it with high number sandpaper, then polish. If you ruin it, there is a guy back east selling very nice repros.

*unfortunately he has not got around to making Laredo ones yet.

Depends on how yellow it is. If the color goes all the way thought nothing will polish it out. If you do try sanding it I wouldn't use a grit any coarser than 2000 grit or you will have a great deal trouble polishing out the scratches made by the sandpaper.

A Magic Eraser or similar has a grit of between 3000 and 5000. I've used them to get nasty stuff off plastic. Test an area before committing to a whole project as it may dull the finish worse than when you started. My $.02

You just can't fix stupid

Here is the person I saw in another FB group selling nice Repo Standard Horn button emblems.

Jatepper is actually a member here and is the seller. Send him a dm.

Hey guys. I have not been active on this page for years. I do most of my Jeep related surfing on Facebook.

But anyhow, I sell replacement emblems that are 99% spot on to originals. Foiled AMC emblem, brushed steel text, exact font and exact epoxy doming. The backing plate is aluminum too.

Faded emblems drive me nuts. It's the first thing I notice when I hop in one of my Jeeps.

$30/ea. Best to shoot me a text as I'm not on here often enough. Five2Zero-7Eight9-Zero87Five.

I just ordered one of these. Jeremy got right back to me.

How do you remove the emblem? Is it the same as the shift emblems. I replaced those, but the horn emblem seems far tighter. Any suggestions. Don't want to screw up the horn button.

Thanks.

Hey Michael. Easy pezy!

Pop off horn button from steering wheel. On the back side there is a little "wad" of epoxy. Scrape that off then push the horn button out (from back to front) with a small screwdriver. Clean old epoxy residue off the horn button.

Place new emblem in horn button and ensure it is centered. From the back side squirt some RTV in there through the hole. Let it cure several hours.

If you have a base model wheel, I find it easier to drill a hole in the back then pop the emblem out the front with a screwdriver. The base model horn buttons don't have this epoxy wad on the back and there's no preexisting hole. Alternately, you can pry them off with a small scribe, but you risk damage to the face of the horn button.

Let me know if you have other questions and thanks for those who have texted and ordered.

Too many Jeeps to count....
