H1 steering gear box replacement

I bought a few Hummer H1 steering gear boxes AS-IS, so we will see what condition they are in (although look descent in the pics). Before picking one and installing it into my Cj-7, is there any way's of checking them out and determining what level of working condition they are in?

Good question?

I know manual steering gears are pretty simple internally, but I have never been inside a power H1 gear. Years ago I bought a used one off of a first gen Camaro in a wrecking yard because it was tight, I could tell it wasn’t worn because there was no slack or backlash between the steering shaft input and the pitman arm shaft. I took the guts out of it, and put them in my Firebird steering gear. The housings are different but the internals are interchangeable. I did that back in the nineties. The steering in my Firebird is still tight to this day after swapping those parts.

I would do a Google search on the H1 steering gear overhaul and go from there. Take them apart and use the best parts to make one good one, and new seals.

Why do I own a CJ? I like to “Balance the wrench and the steering wheel”
