Nothing like teaching a kid to do for himself and do the job right the first time!
Wish we had more of that in this 'Video-Phone' generation...

More stuff fixed yesterday too!

It came to us with turn-signals not functioning along with a replacement column switch unit. Replaced the switch (teaching the boy how to use a steering wheel puller and both of us learning about lock-plate removal) and they still didn't function. By troubleshooting we found no power was going into the switch from the turn signal flasher (we checked fuses, swapped flasher with hazard, tracked power or rather lack-thereof into the column switch, etc.) Upon close inspection it turned out one half of the receptacle for the turn signal fuse wasn't making connection. Bent it back to grab the fuse securely and away they went. Still seems like we might have a flaky ground or connection on the front passenger flasher, but that's easy enough to deal with.

In addition, the engine always seemed a little noisy but I figured I'd eventually get a "round tuit". Was rolling around on a creeper underneath just making sure everything looked good (and enjoying the cool shade) and while scooting around I grabbed the exhaust and it wiggled like a loose tooth! Seems it had about 1/4" gap where it attached to the exhaust manifold. Tightened that puppy down and now instead of it having a bit of a "buzz" to the exhaust sound it has a much lower exhaust tone (it has a Flowmaster on it.) Performance wise it has a much smoother deceleration/engine braking.

Resolved some other smaller items and found out that there is an excessive bit of play in the steering into/within the box itself, but we'll do some research on that and deal with it in the near future.

Loved getting the fist-bumps and high-fives from the boy throughout all this. Last night he said "you know what is really neat? we fixed all the things so far with this much money out..." and he made a zero sign with his hand. I also don't think he touched his video game all day yesterday!

He sure looks like he's taking to it in this pic taken Saturday at the Oroville Clay Pit SVRA, his first time with a manual transmission:

Just a hop, skip, and a jump away from the Plumas National Forest!

Why is it that all 'Jeep Guys' are grinning like idiots when you see them in pictures?
I'd say it's just THAT much fun!
