engine bolt size

I'm finally getting my 304 off of the wooden pallet its living on and up onto an engine stand. I don't have any bolts to mount through into the block though and don't know which size to get when I hit the hardware store. If anyone knows the length and size I would appreciate the info.

Bolt size

They are either 3/8"x16 x 4" or 7/16"x14x4". I also have some washers handy to take up any slack.

I used a combination of 3/8x16x3.5" and 7/16x16x3.5". I used all grade 8 hardware and used a few washers to get the proper tightness and fit.

3/8 x 16 was the winner, but 3.5 and 4" bolts were waaaay longer than my stand needed, but nothing an extra lug nut and a few washers couldn't eat up. I bought standard bolts, if I had been thinking I would have gotten at least grade 5. That 304 is crazy heavy.

If someone used long 3/8" bolts for the two side bolts (three & nine 'o clock positions) during the final assembly of the motor & trans, would this cause an alignment issue with the tranny input shaft ?

there should be 2 sleaves that line up the bell housing to the motor on the 3 & 9 o'clock bolts that take 7/16-14 bolts
