Diff Identification

Good day all, I know there is a bunch of diff identification on this site, just looking for clarification is all, I bought this 77 Cj5 and was told it had Dana 35 axles, but I think I'm looking at a Dana 60 rear

The D44 and D60 look basically the same except for the size, so they can be tough to differentiate in a picture. But my guess would be D44.

77 CJ-7- AMC 360, Edelbrock cam, MC2100, Fenderwells, CJ T18/D20, Chevy D44/EB 9" rear, Trutrac f/r, 4.11, SOA, 1.25 lift shackles, 35x12.50 BFG KM2s, Shackle Reversal

thank you, I agree with Dana 44 after I took another look,

I'm having more trouble with the front. There is no tags to be found on this thing. well other than the VIN lol. and the previous owner has swapped things that don't make sense to me. I was researching ignition mods the other day and mine has points, but I thought jeep went away from points after '74? and the carb appears to be a Carter BBD and from an '81 I believe...

Im thinking 60. https://comancheclub.com/uploads/arc...ff0d2fc154.jpg

The bolt pattern/shape more closely resembles a 60.

Top left corner, the cover has a inward curve for the bolt on the 60, on the 44 it is still rounded outwards.

Is there any tag or casting numbers on it? A tag held by the cover bolts?

There are numbers stamped into the ring gear. You could always pull the cover and look for that. I found this link for ID with the part numbers on the gears if it is a D44:

It's the 18437 in this picture (found online)

Dunno why the picture isn't working.... shows in the preview...

there are no marks on the outside at all, or tags, and I want to pull the covers and check the condition of things, kinda wanted to buy the gaskets first. But maybe I will have to pull it and then buy the gasket.

I did however find this on the bottom of the front diff.

BOM and date stamps are on the front of the tube to the right side of the pumpkin for a Dana (anything is possible, but Dana were reasonably consistent). The tags may be gone, but you could raise the stamp by gently polishing the surface and then use a piece of paper and crayon to lift the numbers. There may also be a model number stamped on to the pumpkin casting at bottom right, just outside the cover.

I ran my hand all along the top of the tubes and couldn't find anything, but I'm going to grab a light and some cleaner and go look again,

I said top and then changed it to front. Memory is not as good as used to be since I gave up drinking.

I'm thinking 60 also based on the shape Cutlass mentioned.

@Cutlass pictures that don't begin with "https" won't post anymore.
