CJ7 restoration

Thought I’d start a new thread to document my build. Been many years since I owned a ‘67 CJ5 and an ‘00 TJ. Both were built as trail rigs. Just picked up an ‘85 CJ7. My plan is to build a reliable street rig keeping it close to stock. Won’t be a DD, but I’m sure I’ll put a lot of miles on it.

It’s currently got a blown 4.2, T5, Dana 300, AMC 20 and d30. Drivetrain seems fair at this point minus the engine. It came with a “working” 4.2 to swap in as well. Frame and body definitely need some work. Haven’t torn into it quite far enough to know exactly what all it needs. But luckily the jeep is about 95% complete.

I’ll be making updates here as I progress along.

Here it is after about half a day breaking it down. I’ve been very meticulous so far keeping parts organized and all wiring labeled. Still have a ways to go until it’s stripped. So far the only issue was the nutserts spun on the front grill panel. That’s going to be a hassle later.

That diamond plate leads me to guess at least side panels and lower cowl reinforcement brackets.

Only got about 30 mins of work in today before I had to be on daddy daycare duty. Disconnected and labeled the dash wiring and got the windshield off. Be a few days until I get back to it.

We all have to start somewhere and your Jeep reminds me of mine when I first started to break it down into pieces.


WARNING! DO NOT THROW AWAY ANY USED, BROKEN, RUSTED OR DEFECTIVE OEM PARTS JUST YET.
I can't express that more than enough and make sure they are all bagged and tagged during the process. Old OEM parts are by far better than new offshore China crap any day of the week. A sandblaster and powder coat would be an ideal investment if you can. Way cheaper than replacement and more durable than paint. Good luck in your restoration, been there, done that and it was very satisfying.

Well my helper and I Made some progress today. I was off work so We spent most of the day on it. Have it down to the frame, axles and drivetrain. Planning to finish taking it down tomorrow then build a little sand blasting enclosure of some sorts. Then I’ll go to town. Need to run to harbor freight and tractor supply for a blaster and media. Hope it works half decent.

The body is in pretty sorry shape. Has a lot of patches I didn’t know about. What’s left from the original tub is so thin it’s going to be really tough to work with. I’m toying with just getting a glass tub but those are $$$$. The front half is good, just the tub that’s pretty well shot. Thinking it’ll be worth it to just get a replacement but we’ll see.

The driver side frame has two bad spots, both at the rear spring hangers. I outta be able to Patch that up pretty easy tho. Just will take time. Planning to either make or order a new rear cross member as well. The PO has some ghetto rear bumper welded up to it and it’s half rotted anyway. Need to work on 4 of the body mounts as well.

Looking at the front suspension, it may be a Rubicon Express lift kit installed, which are not cheap. That's a keeper and so is your little helper there too.

I’ll take a few photos of the shop tomorrow if I think of it. Thanks for th compliments. It’s 30x40x10 but shoulda went bigger. It still suits me fine for a hobby shop. When I was a kid in high school working on my junk in the street at home I swore when I grew up and got some adult money i was going to build a shop for myself. In fact I built 2 of them but the other doesn’t have any floor or electric, it’s just storage.

My helper loves being out there. I just had to order her a new set of bibs and boots cause she put grew her other stuff. She just turned 3 and doesn’t ever shut up. We adopted her at 2 days old. She’s pretty cool.

Don’t have any new photos today. All I did was sandblast the frame. Not even halfway done yet. Sandblasting really sucks. I made a little tent/blast enclosure from junk I had laying around which is really working nice to keep the mess contained. I outta have some new photos up in a few days.

Only thing I got accomplished today was getting the spare motor on the engine stand. I was busy helping a buddy with his old K5. I need to figure out why my Chevy won’t start too this week. I’m a shop teacher and we go back to school tomorrow so I won’t be working on the CJ much this week. Here’s a few shop and barn photos as promised (messy as hell at the moment). Built both myself, the barns 16x30 with a 12x20 leanto on the side. That’s just a stone floor and used to store all my junk. Used to park my camper in there when I had it. The shops 30x40x10 with 2 9’ doors and 1 10’ door. Shops insulated with 1” foam board, 6” floor and a 200amp electric service.

Next step is clean up and organize a bit so I can walk to the beer fridge. Then I need to pull the motor trans and t-case. Finish stripping the old junk off the frame like the wire out bump stops, old brake lines and stuff like that. Then I can really go to town with the sand blaster. Once that’s all done i can take down my ghetto tent and work on patching the frame. Both rear spring mounts on the driver side are rotted through and the front mount on the rear passenger spring needs a little love. I ha e a cnc plasma table at school I’m hoping to use to make new pieces, but it might end up being simpler to just do each piece by hand. We’ll have to wait and see. Hoping to have the frame completely done by the end of sept. The offshore fishing is heating up though so who knows how much time I’ll spend on the jeep. This was supposed to be a “winter” project but I’m off to a decent start.

Sweet project. Halfway through mine I discovered powder coating. TS for the blaster and media, Harbor for the powder gun and Prismatic for the powder. Used, 50 buck oven on Craigslist. Wish I would have discovered it sooner. Example below.

Not much to post lately. Been slowly sandblasting the frame. This really sucks. What a mess. I have another evening worth of blasting then I’ll drop the springs and axles, and start working on the metal repairs. Need to come up with a way to index the body mount hole locations since my mounts are all rotted out. I have primer and paint on the way from Eastwood and new prebent fuel and brake lines coming from quadratec. So hopefully I’ll have the frame 100% done in a week or 3. Then I’ll work on the axles and get a complete roller assembly. Then I plan to start the engine work. Once that’s done I wanna do seals and whatever else the trans and tcase need, then get the drivetrain back in while the body’s off. I’ll try to remember to get photos along the way. But there’s not much to look at right now.
