cj5 1979 amc20 wtf

hello, rear wheel started to smoke. thought it was brakes. installed all new brakes. still smoked. turns out the wheel bearing is disintegrated. its an original 2 piece axle. got new bearing pressed on. BUT. i didnt remove old seal and put new seal on top of old. Im guessing i need to remove old seal and put new seal on. also i didnt packed bearing but not a ton. I am going to tear it all apart and remove old seal and replace w new one and pack bearing better. IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW??? ANY ADVICE OR TIPS WOULD BE GREAT RELATED TO NEW BEARING AND SEALS.

I (and others) have not had good luck reusing a two piece axle after replacing bearings and seals.

With two of my CJ-5s (twice) The marriage of the hub and shaft neither lasted two months before I "spun" them.

I was driving normal (No hot dogging!) I got by, by welding the shaft to the nut and the nut to the hub until I could buy a one piece set.

When it happened with the other Jeep, I did the same thing----that time----lesson learned----reinforced as I saw it happen to other folks.

Others may have other thoughts----My suggestion is to go ahead and get the one piece axles.

oh gosh! not what i wanted to hear but thanks. If i cont. with the two piece. the inner seal, does the spring face toward the differential and the flat back part toward the bearing? thanks again.

The Axle Nut is extremely high torque. Get a long bar and stand on it. This forces the splines to make a nest in the hub.

If it starts to creak, check the torque again. When they creak they are wearing and fretting on that join.

You can get 30 -40 years on a 2 piece axle, they do not break every day.

While not common, spinning an AMC20 hub does happen. new hubs are about 50-75 bucks and if you aren't looking to up grade to one piece axles but still need piece of mind, are a good investment (they are designed to have the splines cut on installation). Either way, it is imperative that the axle nut be torqued to a minimum of 250FT/LBS of torque.

You will need a special puller or a press for removing the old hub.

Inspect the drum and backing plate for any damage.

Insure to double check your end play on installation. The new bearings/seals may have changed it.

Paperwork will ruin any military force.
