Can't find air cleaner for Carter Carburetor

New to Jeeps - recently purchased an '82 CJ7 for my 13 yr old son and I to work on together (he's teaching me!)

There was no air cleaner on the carb when we bought it and the PO said he recently installed the carb, which I believe is a Carter T2-8383S. I can't find an air filter assembly or a bracket that will attach the air cleaner assembly to the carb. Maybe that's why the PO never put one on. Picture of the carburetor attached.

I had a similar situation with the BBD carburetor like yours. I went to O'Reilly's with the diameter of the carburetor opening. I bought an Edelbrock aftermarket air cleaner with different mounting bases. It uses the same filter element as stock, and fits without interference to the power brake booster. Also, it has a chrome cover which guarantees a minimun increase of 10 HP. Lol.

I think you are missing the sort of U-Shaped rod with a center threaded hold down / wing nut.

Found some photos on eBay - This might be your carb:

I have a generic go faster chrome one, about $10. I would love to have an original Thermostatic Air Cleaner, they are so much better. Fixing method as above, you could make one with stiff wire and nut and bolt.

Thanks! Yes, that is the bracket I've been looking for, but haven't been able to find. Much appreciated!

You’re welcome. Checked eBay and saw that part was sold. Did you purchase it? Seller is great. Have dealt with him on several Jeep related purchases.

Jeep Wrangler YJ (square headlights) production years ran from 1987 to 1995. In the ‘87 through ‘90 model years the 258 six cylinder was an option.

FYI: I run a factory air cleaner with the "accordion snorkel" to the inside of the grill on my '79 CJ5 304 V8.

Not a fan of the open element air cleaners. They just pull hot air from around the engine.

Glad you were able to get that part. Here is a list of web sites in addition to eBay you may find useful:
