Your '81 CJ5 came stock with a Dana 30 front axle (1972-1983) and an AMC model 20 rear axle ('76 and up) with 2 piece axles - axle & hub.

Good sources of info on the sites below:

Accurately wrong usually!!!

A first guess from the shape of the diff cover. A Dana 44 is very different to an AMc20!!

Yes, probably a Dana30 and AMC20. Swaps and upgrades are so common in the Jeep world, nothing is safe to assume.

Dana44 are common swaps. Also, in 1980, the CJ7/8 got a wider axle, while the CJ5/6 kept the narrow style. I've seen a few CJ5 with the wider axles swapped in. The AMC20 had a 1pc axle, but 2pc axle swaps are super common.

Gear ratios are all over the place. 2.73, 3.31, 3.54, 3.73, 4.10, etc. The "standard" ratio depended on your engine size. They was also had a limited-slip option, track-loc. There will be a letter code on the axle that will tell you what it came from the factory with.

People often got Jeeps with lower ratios because of "fuel efficiency", but it becomes a dog once you put bigger tires in. SO... gear ratios are also swapped around. Its also common to see welded spiders and lunchbox lockers.

So.... maybe a stock AMC20 and Dana30. Maybe not. lol

I do realize the OP's Jeep could have had an axle swap.

All I was trying to do was post the factory OEM axles the Jeep was equipped with when new.

The wide track axle use started in 1982. The last year of the CJ6 for US domestic markets was 1975, exports stopped after 1980.

if you can identify them as Dana axles, they all have a build code stamped into the axle tube. There were tags on the diff covers when new, find very few have survived.
