83'CJ7 pinion bearing

Tag on front differential housing 5363733 and under that 2 72 49 18 the front axle does not turn when hub locked and and wheel turning, transfer to front differential is fine. I busted it trying to pull a friends F250 out of woods. Also would like to know what year/model applications would work on 1983 CJ7 AutoTorqueflight 999, Dana 300 without modifications. I'm looking to buy a used hub to hub setup some one has taken out for a build up.

Just do it once. It should get you close. Example 1 full turn of tire might get you 3 1/2 turns of the axle shaft. 3.54. Or scrape off the crud on the plate in the Dana 30 cover and it should tell you there also

85 CJ7 that is a work in progress.

It really isn't that big a deal to put a pan under the diff and pull the cover. That way you get to check more than just revolutions: Check the carrier, the teeth, change the gear oil, etc. There is a stamping on the outside of the ring gear that will give you ratio, build sequence and date. It's regular maintenance. Put it back on with a generous bead of black or gray RTV and some 90wt.

Busted Differential

Could not get front axle to turn when wheel turned, so I know for sure that diff. did bust. So I will buy a used one when I find out the ratio. Tag on the front of housing is 5363733 and below that on same tag is 2 72 49 18 Any help appreciated.

49/18=2.72, but you need to pull the diff cover. How are you going to go buy parts if you don't inspect it first? Do you have your lock-outs engaged?

How do you know the PO didn't change the gear? I wouldn't go by the tag. You need to have you lockouts engaged so the front driveshaft will turn. If you still can't get the shaft to turn beause the diff is broken, you need to pull the cover to determine gear ratio, not just use the tag.

What is your rear ratio? Your front SHOULD be the same, again - relying on the PO for that.

pinion bearing?

I took cover off front diff. this evening and when turning locked hub wheel, ring gear, spider gears all rotated smoothly through both axles, although the front drive shaft still did not turn. I took front uiniversal loose and the driveshaft would rotate smooth and easy. So is it the pinion bearing that has busted and making all the noise and metal to metal grind? I will take out gears this weekend and pull pinion. Does anybody know if it's a Dana or AMC by numbers. I cleaned up covers and degreased it all and all I find is 5363733 and below 2.72 49 18 which I know is ratio.

which pinion bearing?

Have found several at different prices and some with different tail housing design applications. No definite answers from parts people.Have not had time to pull wheels and axles out enough to pull gears, hopefully will find time this weekend. Then maybe I'll be able to match up pictures. 83' CJ7 Dana 30 2.72. New to this so any help appreciated.

this is what your Dana 30 will look like:

and this is what the 2.72 gear set and carrier will look like
It will be stamped on the side of the gear
3 2084D 620664 A3R991 49 18 .... (the 49 18 is a 2.72 ratio) :
