Cj 350 conversion questions

hi all, I've got a 76 cj7 304 th400 quadratrac, 304 is old and tired and I don't feel like rebuilding it. I have a strong 350 to bolt in, will the th400 bolt to it or an adapter or just use a chev th400. if I can still use the original trans can I replace the quadratrac with a dana 20? I'm mechanically inclined just haven't done this before. thanks for any advise you can give me.

You'd have to build a transmission...Chevy TH400 with the AMC tailshaft & rear housing.
The Dana 20 tcase wont work, as the rear output is in a different place.

^^^ So as he said, it won't bolt up. AMC th400 and chevy th400 different bellhousing patterns. So you'll have to get a chevy trans AND a $500 adapter to allow the Dana 20 to marry up to the chevy th400. Totally doable and worthwhile endeavor.

There is a company that makes a bell housing conversion. You cut off your current bell, and a new one bolts in place using new bolts that go through the front pump. I must admit that I know very little, other than I've seen it, time and time again researching bell housing adaptation. Just something to look into before making a final decision.

Amc th400 and chevy th400 have different bell housings. You can bet a conversion adapter (plate) to go between the chevy 350 and amc th400. It pushes the trans back about 3/4". You can get a adapter (including different trans output shaft) to take amc th400 to d300 transfer and I believe a kit to take to model 20 transfer case. Both would also require a different rear end (centered rear end. You can also get a chevy 350, chevy th400 (have rebuilt with d300 or model 20 adapter kit) and get a centered rear end. I have a 79 cj7 with chevy 350 engine, adapter plate, stock th400 trans with quadratrac trans. My cj8 build isn't decided on the engine. Have a 401 to rebuild but might also go chevy 350 again. Have on shelf a amc th400 trans mated to a dana 300 transfer case. If I go the chevy route I'll get the plate (adapter) like the cj7 and do the th400/dana300 route.
