2bbl carter carb, trying to set correctly

I might take this to the mechanic, but want to try first. The carter carb was rebuilt. Started off idling high 2000. I got a digital timing light made some adjustments with the Idle screw and distributor. Got it down to the 600s. Now I either smell strong odor of gas or strong exhaust. Just seeing if there are any suggestions, before I take it to a mechanic.

Is your choke fully open is the first thing to check, next, about where are the idle mixture screws set? 2-1/2 turns out from seated is normally a good starting point. You want to adjust the screws for the fastest idle and then bring the idle rpm down with the curb idle speed screw

Make sure you DO NOT tighten those screws too much, Just go easy until they seat.
