258 oil dipstick tube

Found my oil dipstick tube has ‘popped out’ and is leaking oil. It is not broken but can’t quite figure out how to re-install it properly so no leaking and am unable to find any info about how to re-install. It is the original tube on my 1985 258. That crack in the seam does have me wondering if it is trash now and need to get a new tube and dipstick. Any input is appreciated.
Also, anyone out there know how to properly connect the PCVs to a Howell TBI? Wondering if mine are incorrect and it’s pushing too much pressure.
Thanks for any and all assistance.

I welded one back together once but is was challenging due to the thin metal. I’d look for another one

I had the same problem on mine and replaced mine with the short style tube. I put the tube in the freezer for a few hours and then tapped it in without a problem.

This is a homemade tool designed for installing the dipstick tube. It was made from a socket of equal diameter as the tube (5/16" or 3/8" maybe?). It allows you to tap the tube into place from a bit of an angle away from the tube.

Hope this helps.

The easiest way to get the tube back in is to freeze it overnight. Pull it out of the freezer and coat the upper inserted portion with Bearing & Shaft Retaining compound. Use an oak wood stick or a tool like Matt made and hammer it gently back into place.

PM me if you need a complete, long version, 258 engine oil tube with dipstick. I just may part with it but I have to find it first or I may have sold it already.

I can't believe this happened to someone else!

Mine snapped off right by the block. Got this fitting from Home Depot, drilled out the bore slightly, trimmed the stalk to fix up the small amount of additional length. Works fine. (in the 2 weeks it was broken before I knew it, no oil dripped out, so tight sealing is not that critical.

I've tried several times and the picture does not post. Don't know why, never had this problem before.

I guess there is no money to be made making these replacement tubes or someone would be doing it. Crazy I can find them for them for the V8 but not the 258.

This one is made for a AMC Eagle 258, so it's much shorter, but it should fit. You'll have to cut the dipstick accordingly.

I have fought this fight. I found one from an AMC eagle (short) that fit and I cut my dip stick.
