AxHammer - That CJ is sweet!! To get an 85 that solid is a dream! Good luck with the build, and making the CJ all you want it! Ill be following your thread! Just for my knowledge - how does one find a solid 85 in NM like that from across the country? Is it a buy unseen and a gamble? If so, I think that chance paid off!!

I have three kids, the middle one Zach, is active duty Army, stationed in El Paso. I called him one day in early March, and asked him what he was doing this weekend? and he said nothing Why? I told him about the Jeep in Santa Fa, and he went and looked at, and closed the deal for me. He towed it home and put it in his garage, where he worked on it a little and got it ready for the trip. The PO said it was very reliable, and ready to drive anywhere. Zach and his wife cleaned it up, put a tuneup on it, and fixed a couple minor issues before I flew out with my youngest kid Nick, and we drove it home to N.C.

The first day of our trip home, we went up and through a 7500’ pass. After it pulled that long hill without overheating, I was pretty confident in it.

I put my two degree castor shims under the front axle mount pads. I reset toe-in at 1/16”. I reset the 31’s at 29 PSI each, and installed my new longer speedometer cable, looping around and through the body structure in such a manner it has reduced the sharp bend that causes the premature failure last month 90 miles into my trip. Time to drive this puppy to work, Happy Friday everyone!

Ordered more parts today, trying to get my hardtop and steel doors on, so I can make a hoist system, and racks to store them while removed. Then I’ll take them off for the summer/fall.

My kid, Zack is flying the “Dust Off” mission in Afghanistan this time around, it’s his second deployment there. He is an IP (instructor pilot) on the Blackhawk. Dust Off is kinda like a Coast Guard mission, but it’s in a war zone, they go in and retrieve the wounded (unarmed). This is his Unit’s patch, I thinks it’s pretty freaking cool!

I can’t wait till he gets back, I’m gonna kick his azz on the golf course.

I was getting into my CJ-7 today to drive home from work when I noticed these two strap tie down clips, and I was wondering if they are to tie down the rear seat when it is in the folded vertical position. There were some different clips to secure the rear seat in my other thread, and they didn’t really make sense to me, but the ones on my Jeep seem to be in a good position to hold the folded seat down better.

Did you find new headlight bezels? Shell Valley Wheels has them in their CJ catalogue.

I bought some OEM style hardware to bolt down my hardtop. I set the top in place this weekend and finally got around to drilling the holes for the hardware.

The bolts are too short, they will not catch a thread of the special nuts. In this picture I am pushing the end of the bolt up, to make it flush with the tub sheet metal underneath. I am doing this to show the length which is inadequate. Has anyone run into the OEM style aftermarket bolts sold as hardtop hardware that is too short, or is my OEM hardtop flange is too thick. This doesn’t make sense, but it is a 34 YO Jeep, and the hardtop is probably older. I’m pretty sure the hardware was made in China.

Yes, I have the bezels. I ordered a bunch of stuff from Morris 4X4, mostly hardtop/liftgate stuff to finish my install.

I dug my early bronco 9” out of the back of the shop and started tearing it down. I’m gonna take the bare housing to my chassis guy so he can verify it’s straight and true before adding a brace to beef it up.

I have painted my new liftgate, and I’ll be installing the glass in it next.

I removed both bucket seats to swap sides, but one is rusted out pretty bad at one bolt attachment location. The other seat is solid, but one mount bolt broke when I removed it. That’s the seat I’ve been driving around on, three of four mount bolts installed. Going to look at a set of Rugged Ridge seats tomorrow, according to the CL add they are new, so I may end up solving my seat problem tomorrow.

It’s still running good, and fun to drive! Still topless too.
