1979 Jeep CJ T18A Transmission

Does anyone have an idea of what the value is on a Texas bolt pattern T18A transmission w granny low 1st gear in good condition? Thanks.

IF it is a genuine wide range CJ T18A then it will slot into a CJ fairly easily and give a low 1st gear. BUT:

- I have one in my J20 and the low 1st gear is of absolutely no use except when starting on a steep hill or crawling at extremely low speeds.

- If I put one in a CJ I would be crazy unless I wanted to go rock crawling. Rock crawlers have lot of transmissions and transfer cases to choose from so it is not exactly a stand out must have.
- Spares are more limited for Jeep T18 than for Ford T18 and it i snot freshly rebuilt, just "good condition".

I would struggle to justify fitting one. So the market is limited, it is 40+ years old and not freshly rebuilt. If you cleaned it up real pretty you may get $400 for it.

Are you buying for you?
-Having a Ford T18 in my '76 CJ5, I agree with everything Bagus said.

Are you selling?
-If you are selling, I agree with everything Bagus said...but there's folks out there that will pay more than what a T18 is worth, so you might get lucky. There are plenty of folks out there that put them in their CJs simply because they want one.

All that being said, my CJ is a road cruiser. I have zero use for unsynchronized 1st gear unless I'm starting on a steep hill and don't want to burn up my clutch starting from a complete stop. My long term goal is morphing into overlanding at some point. I have an m101 CDN2 trailer that I'm slowly working on to make worthy of a small camping trailer. At some point, that first gear will be helpful which is why I put it in mine.

I have one in my 79 CJ7. I bought it many years ago paired with a twin shift model 20 transfer case with lower gears than stock. The plan was to build it as a rock crawler, but I started getting deployed every year or two and no longer had time for the Jeep. Unfortunately, rust and time have taken their toll, so I think the parts individually are worth more than the Jeep. I guess the transmission is worth what someone will pay. Thanks for the input.

If you are selling it WITH a modified transfer case then it is the rock crawler crowd. The combo is probably worth nearer $1000

I wouldn't sell one for less than $500.
