1976 CJ7 rear end gear ratio.

I have a 1976 CJ7 that I just got . It was originally a Quadratrac but the front axle appears to have lock out hub on it that were missing and the front drive shaft was removed . I was told maybe someone put in the wrong gear ratio on the replaced front axle and they couldnt make it work so they just took the drive shaft and lock outs off . My question is the front axle has a tag on it stating 3 73 which I assume is the ratio the rear axle has no tag but appears to be original . Dose anyone know what the correct gear ratio would have been on the rear axle ? It is a 304 V8 with an automatic trans.

Thanks for your help.

Chad...

I read the simular threads and answered my own question I think . My front axle says 3 73 my rear axle has the stamp ( A ) on it and guess that means I have a 3:54 open on the rear . This won't work very well will it ?? That is probably why it was disconnected when I bought it . Am I right in my thinking on this ?

Thanks,

Chad...

Got lucky and found a good complete 3:54 axle only 20 miles away . It is off a year or two later model with disc brake's ( a real plus ) and he had the rear axle a straight six engine still hooked to a th400 auto trans and the Quadratrack transfer case with a low range and both drive shafts . So I bought it all . If you know anybody looking for a good complete straight 6 engine I am selling it , They say it only has 40k on it but can't confirm . I will keep the rest for spare's.

I know it is too late, but always drop the covers and do a tooth count. Many times PO's will do gear swaps and there is no way to tell short of actually counting the teeth. This also gives you an excuse to change the fluids and do a carrier inspection.

Adding to what jeepdaddy said, stamped on the ring gear is the tooth count for the ring and pinion. 41 11 is 3.73 and 46 13 would be 3.54. Divide the ring gear tooth count (46) by the pinion tooth count (13). Good thing to do whenever buying axles. Don't believe what the seller says. Verify for yourself. I learned the hard way.
