1951 CJ3A Restomod - A Father/Son Project

This build thread is going to be documenting our 1951 CJ3A Restomod project.

We're well into the project already, so we're a bit late starting the build thread, but here it goes!

Project Goal: Build a reliable, flat-fender summer daily driver.

My father used to have a 1941 Ford GP from 1982-1997. He was able to partially restore it, but never was able to finish it due to lack of funds. Unfortunately, he had to sell it. I tracked it down about 5 years ago, but it's ended up in the UK and is going to be restored. As it was a non-standard prototype, parts are expensive and hard to come by. So a civilian Jeep was a better fit.

My dad's GP the day it was sold. This was GP S/N 8541 #41 of the original 1500 prototypes build in 1941.

The Jeep: A Basket Case 1951 CJ3A

We bought this Jeep in April of 2017. To most it would be a lost cause. However, I seem to have a thing for resurrecting lost causes. So it may be more work, but it will be worth it in the end.

This CJ3A is quite the "Jeep Salad". What we have here is a 1951 CJ3A chassis, a 1948ish CJ2A body, M38 windshield frame and a later CJ3B/CJ5 F134 engine.

The Plan

Powertrain: Keep /restore the factory L134/T90/D18.
Axles: Keep the D25/D44
Chassis/Suspension: repair damaged frame/keep stock height springs
Electrical: Convert to 12V and electronic ignition
Brakes: Dual res master cylinder, GM disc conversion for front / 10" early CJ5 drum rear
Body: Search for CJ3A tub or buy new reproduction
Wheels and Tires: Stock 16" steelies with vintage style all terrain tires

To be continued....

Ricsan and GR-CJ like this.

1992 YJ 4.0L, AX-15, 4" RE Standard Lift, 35x12.5R15 Maxxis Bighorn MT's, Grizzly Locked 8.8 Rear, HP44 with Spartan, 4.10's, Smittybilt Armor, JCR Off road Stage 2 Front Bumper, Custom Rear Bumper

Thanks. Since we bought it we've done quite a bit, but still have a long way to go. We've been concentrating on the running gear so far.

We have a running L134 engine and rebuilt T90/D18. Right now we're digging into the axles. More to come soon!

Good luck, I have a mostly original 1951 CJ3A with a 1952 L134 engine so I will be watching with interest. They are so easy to work on that it is only funds and time that keep you back.

I have the 12V electrics and disc brakes. I can use 12V bulbs and batteries and an alternator beats a dynamo but the disc brakes are not as good as the drums on my CJ7 which came from a 70s Land Cruiser. I used Petronix electronic ignition in the original distributor and it is amazing for the money and so tiny and took 10 minutes to fit, I would recommend it in an instant.

I also have the Good Year custom Xtra Crip Hi Miler tyres which give that tall narrow look and are absolutely great on a light CJ that sees a lot of dirt tracks.

BagusJeep lives in Bali.

Sounds like a good father and son project. Tell us about your partner and how he feels about this. Now that you have a real Jeep update your profile.

The project sat for about 8 months until January 2018. As usual, life and lack of funding get in the way. We stripped the Jeep down to the frame to ***** the condition of the chassis and the tub.

In addition to being from a CJ2A, the tub is pretty rough. Dented on pretty much every panel. So we're going to look for a CJ3A body or by a reproduction. Our goal now is to get a solid running chassis.

The frame is pretty rough as well. Years of abuse plowing have twisted the front some. The rear cross member and V-brace are mangled as well. Old parts were cut out and replaced with new. Still need to get the frame straightened and media blasted before we repair the front sections.

Didn't make much progress during the spring/summer of 2018. Had to make room for my new toy (Danmar D-10/CX 10k 2-post lift) and do some maintenance on the YJ so I could take it out to play

Now back to the CJ...

We needed a L134 engine. Found a good running engine for a reasonable price.

Got the engine on a makeshift test stand to see how good it ran before moving forward.

Short video of the test run

https://photos.app.goo.gl/WsSRrv7tq4gNK3Jb6

Time to reseal and clean up the engine

The engine had an "industrial" engine cylinder head on it. Used on mobile welders and generators that used the L134 as a powerplant. Not so good for road use, as they were made for fixed RPM operation. So we got a good cylinder head, had it cleaned and decked to increase the compression slightly for a little more performance.

Still need to rebuild the carb, but it's all clean and ready for storage until needed again.

Some progress from spring summer of this year. Small progress is better than no progress.

Scored some brake parts from the junkyard. GM calipers and brackets for the front and 10" self adjusting drums for the rear. Also scored some cool vintage Warn hubs. Parts were courtesy of a 1986 Grand Wagoneer and a 1969 Jeepster Commando. All for less than $50

Also rebuild the T90/D18. Didn't get any photos of the rebuild process though. Still needs paint.

So now I'm more or less caught up. We've been working on the Dana 25 and Dana 44 axles the past few weeks. Will post some photos once we have them completed.
