stuck in 4X4

Wondering if anyone has any ideas about why I cannot shift out of 4 wheel drive? I have a 2006 TJ. I live in NE Alberta and for about the past 3 weeks have been in a deep freeze with temps staying below -25 degrees Celsius and going as low as -40. the roads were (and still are a sheet of ice in some areas). I tried to shift out of 4X4 and my lever would not move and I did not want to put too much pressure and break something.
The only thing that did happen was I hit ice while in 2X4 and started swerving and did end up going up onto a snowbank on the side of the road but drove back onto road where I quickly put it into 4X4 (and it stayed there until a few days ago when I tried to shift out and it wouldn't go) my Jeep is trail rated and when I gave it a cursory inspection I did not see any damage.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Sounds like there could be some water maybe in your transfer case, maybe the linkage has some snow packed in it and it has frozen

I agree with the frozen linkage.

When we do right, no one remembers. When we do wrong, no one forgets.

Thank-you for your reply. I am now off work for the next 4 days so I am going to place a heater in my garage to try to thaw things out and hopefully dry it as well to prevent refreezing.

After you make sure it is not frozen, spray some lube on the linkage. Sometimes things just get bound up when you're in 4x4 and a little lube can do the trick.

Likely driveline bind not letting it go back into 2wd, more so if you just pulled into your garage with a nice concrete floor. Put the Jeep into reverse and put a little pressure onto the stick and let off the brake and tap the gas and it will likely pop back into 2wd.

Second this. My Jeep can stay in 4wd for a quarter mile is if desires.

Thanks for your assistance but about 5 hrs of having my heater on I tried my lever and heard a chunk of ice hit the floor and it came out of 4WD, I drove it the past 2 days and it went in and out of 4WD like a dream.
