Laptop memory

I have an HP Pavilion 6324us running vista. AMD turion X2 tl50. 2 slots for ram. It needs DDR2 pc2 5300 ram. Crucial.com says that the max my computer can handle is 2gb of ram

" Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-5300 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.*

*Not to exceed manufacturer supported memory."

I know Vista can handle way more than this, but is crucial wrong? I was gonna put 2 2gb sticks in there and run 4gb. Would this be overkill for the the computer and the weak processor I have?

I would look up what HP says is the max memory. The motherboard is going to be the limiting factor, not Vista.

putting 4GB of RAM into a PC running a 32bit OS is pointless and futile. the most the machine can address is 3GB.

I'd believe what crucial says about a 2GB limit...

Does it even matter? it aint gonna hurt it, and 4 gig of laptop ram is like 20 bucks...

and to be technically correct 32-bit OSs can address 4GB. Just in reality the OS has to address the video card memory and PCI addresses also. So 4GB of memory in a laptop will probably net you around 3.25-3.5GB.

Overkill? Nah, you can never have too much memory.

4GB should work. I have motherboards that only support 2GB of DDR2 800 and I'm running 4GB of DDR2 1200 at 1200 and they work fine.

the laptop should be able to use 4 gigs of ram but it will only look like it utilizes 3gigs, the rest of the memory gets allocated to various processes more or less permanently, but the motherboard is the limiting factor so i would look into what hp says the max is not crucial

I've found a few places that says your laptop supports up to 4GB, but HP says 2GB max... Basically up to whether or not you want to risk the money.
