I for one will never understand the need to wave to a complete stranger just because his vehicle says JEEP on it. Sure it's cool. You have a Jeep, and I have a Jeep... But I don't know you. You could be a serial killer for all I know, why would I want to initiate a wave to you if I don't know who you are?

Do you wave at family members or friends that you recognize? If so, why?

The Jeep Wave, like the wave custom applicable to other types of vehicles etc. over the years stemmed from the human desire to connect with other like-minded individuals; Jeep ownership wasn't common back when it started for this marque, so a friendly wave to connect with another person who shared your taste/choice in vehicle was given. In essence they're members of an extended family, one where enjoyment in something is the common ground instead of genetics.

So what exactly are you trying to say...

When I still had the Bike, riders will wave... as you likely know.

When I first got the YJ, Lots of Jeeps would wave. Mostly older. TJ's not so much... they dont' like square headlights! And now it seams JK's don't wave at all... mostly. Too many on the road and many driven by SUV Moms.
I don't really see it as a thing any more.
